This course is the first year of a two year course designed to teach college level chemistry concepts. Students will learn concepts in stoichiometry, atomic theory, chemical bonding, energetics, material structure, oxidation-reduction, acids, bases, and organic chemistry. Students will be examined on a cumulative basis throughout the course. In spring of senior year, students will take the IB Standard Level (SL) Chemistry Exam and the Advanced Placement(AP) Chemistry Exam. My goals for students: 1. To appreciate chemistry as “the central science”. 2. Engage in exploration of chemistry related careers. 3. Be well prepared for the IB SL/HL Chemistry Exam and the AP Chemistry Exam. 4. Engage is a rigorous laboratory experience Texts and Publications: Zumdahl and Zumdahl, Chemistry, Sixth Edition, Houghton-Mifflin, 2003 Australian Study Guide, AP Chemistry Cliff Notes, IB Paper Chemistry Data Booklet Outline of Study: Topics Covered First Quarter Chapter 1: Chemical Foundations IB: 1, AP: III.B Chapter 2: Atoms, Molecules, and Ions IB: 1, 2, 4, AP: I.A.1, 2, 3 Chapter 3: Stoichiometry IB: 1, 2, 4, 11, AP: I.A.2,3, B.1.a, C, III.B.3, IV.1, 3 Chapter 4: Types of Chemical Reactions IB: 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, AP: I.B.1.a, III.A,B, IV.1 and Solution Stoichiometry Second Quarter Group 4 Projects Chapter 5: Gases IB: 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, AP: I.B.1, II.A1, 2 Chapter 6, 16: Thermochemistry, Entropy, IB: 6, 11, 15, AP: III.E, IV.3 & Free Energy Chapter 7: Atomic Structure and Periodicity IB: 2,3,12,13,14,20, AP: I.A, IV.2 Midterm Exam Third Quarter Chapter 7: Atomic Structure and Periodicity IB: 2,3,12,13,14,20, AP: I.A, IV.2 Chapter 8: Bonding: General Concepts IB: 4, 11, AP: I.B Chapter 9: Covalent Bonding: Orbitals IB: 14, 20, AP: 1.B Fourth Quarter Chapter 10: Liquids and Solids IB: 3, 4, 5, 6, 17, AP: I.B, II.B, Chapter 11: Properties of Solutions IB: 4, 7, 8, 9, 10, 18, AP: II.C, Final Exam Summer 2007 Chapter 18: The Nucleus: A Chemist’s View IB: 2, 3, 12, 13, AP: I.C Materials: 1 1/2 ” 3 ring binder with dividers notebook paper colored pencils pencils and pens graph paper ruler Lab Fee $10.00 TI-83 or other scientific calculator Optional (but encouraged): Barron’s AP Chemistry Prep Manual Grading Policy: Participation, classwork, and homework assignments will count as 25% of the student’s grade.
