Course Description
Employment English is designed for Occupational Diploma 9th- 12th grade students who wish to enter the work force after graduation. The curriculum emphasizes the development of functional skills in reading, writing, and language. Reading activities will focus on decoding and comprehension. Writing will emphasize comprehension and include using written information to communicate effectively with others. Language focuses on mechanics, grammar, and usage of Standard English conventions.

Classroom Expectations
1. I will treat you with respect so that you will know how to treat me, yourself, and others in the classroom.
2. Students will be in their desks and ready to work when the tardy bell rings.
3. Students will bring all materials needed for class and use them accordingly.
4. Students are responsible for making up any missed assignments in a timely manner.
5. Students will follow school rules as stated in the student handbook.

Consequences for Misconduct
Classroom disruptions will be handled by the teacher quietly and individually as determined by the offense. Serious offenses will result in intervention by an administrator and parental contact.

Parent Communication
Parents will receive information regarding their students in the form of a class syllabus, progress reports, and report cards. Letters and phone calls will be used as needed regarding student progress and behavior. Conferences will be scheduled as needed by parent or teacher request.

A=93-100
B=85-92
C=77-84
D=70=76
F=69 and below

Classwork and Homework=40%
Tests, Projects, and Essays=30%
Quizzes and Vocabulary=20%
Warm-up Exercises=10%

CLASSWORK and HOMEWORK -Classwork assignments may include grammar drill and practice, responses to reading, quick writing, and other work designed to allow students the opportunity to practice and sharpen necessary skills. Homework will be given as needed to provide additional practice to reinforce what was introduced in class. Because homework is generally reviewed on the day that it is due, LATE HOMEWORK WILL ONLY BE ACCEPTED WITH AN EXCUSED ABSENCE THROUGH THE OFFICE.
TESTS, PROJECTS, and ESSAYS-Tests will be given after each unit of study. Projects and essays will be assigned periodically to show comprehension of units of study. Students will be given class time to work on their projects and essays.
QUIZZES and VOCABULARY-Reading comprehension quizzes will be given frequently. Vocabulary quizzes will be given on a weekly basis. Other quizzes may include literary terms, grammar checks, and take-home quizzes.
WARM-UP EXERCISES- Warm-up exercises will be kept in the student’s composition notebook. These exercises are daily requirements to be completed at the beginning of class and focus on grammar and reading comprehension.

Procedures for Non-Instructional Routines

Entering the Classroom
1. Walk quietly to your seat and take out appropriate materials
2. Begin Warm-up Exercise as assigned
3. Wait quietly for the teacher to begin and do not cause distractions


Class Participation
1. Pay attention to class discussions
2. Only speak on the subject being discussed
3. Show respect for the opinions of others
4. Move quietly and swiftly with not disruptions during activity rotations

Distribution of Passes
1. Quietly walk over to the Pass Log book without distracting others
2. Completely fill out your information in the Pass Log book
3. Take the appropriate pass for your destination
4. When returning to class, quietly sign back in on the Pass Log and put
the pass back in its appropriate place

End of Period Dismissal
1. Put materials in assigned places
2. Clean up behind yourself
3. Wait for the teacher to dismiss you
