Student Learning

This year students will continue to achieve reading success using Project Read, a multisensory approach to learning decoding, spelling and writing skills. We are reading a class novel and doing story mapping along with it to aid comprehension. Other programs include SRA Reasoning & Writing, the "ASK IT" strategy for reading comprehension and DIBELS, a reading fluency assessment which continuously tracks student progress toward a grade level appropriate goal for reading comprehension. Programs that we use for Written Expression are the SRA Reasoning & Writing and High Performance Writing (new this year). I have one student at the present time that is using SRA's Connecting Math Concepts which is, as all of our programs are,a research-based, direct instruction program Along with this, we use a variety of math activities/instructional materials (a lot of hands-on experiences). Our class also uses various materials, the academic curriculum and computer programs that track progress such as "Looking for Words" and "Earobics" for listening and language skills. We learn social skills through direct instruction, because research has shown that children with attention problems and learning disabilities do not always pick up on social skills indirectly.
