Course Description: : Seventh Grade Science is an integrated science course that focuses on Inquiry, Life Science, Earth Science, and Physical Science. Students will have the opportunity to investigate and explore objectives outlined in the November 2005 South Carolina Standards for Science. This will be accomplished through a combination of teaching methods such as hands-on activities, cooperative learning groups, discussions, note taking, journal writing, group, and individual practice. This course is intended to help students discover how science works in the classroom as well as in the real world. Students will utilize the scientific method to identify and solve problems, apply science process skills to everyday situations, work cooperatively to achieve common goals, make connections between science concepts and current events, connect science and technology using computers and laboratory equipment, make scientific connections through the writing process, and see how different sciences are interdependent.
Course Content Standards / Objectives:
State Standards are available at www. state.sc.us/sde/educator
Course Content Standards: This class will meet South Carolina Standards for Science with an emphasis on: I. Scientific Inquiry- The student will demonstrate an understanding of technological design and scientific inquiry, including process skills, mathematical thinking, controlled investigative design and analysis, and problem solving. II. Life Science- The student will demonstrate an understanding of the structure and function of cells, cellular reproduction, and heredity. The student will demonstrate an understanding of the functions and interconnections of the major human body systems, including the breakdown in structure or function that disease causes. III. Earth Science- The student will demonstrate an understanding of how organisms interact with and respond to the biotic and abiotic components of their environment. IV. Physical Science- The student will demonstrate an understanding of the classifications and properties of matter and the changes that matter undergoes.
Disclaimer: Because our primary goal is to maximize student achievement, material may be added, deleted, and/or substituted at the teacher's discretion based on the individual needs, levels, and learning styles of each class. Creative projects, written assignments and supplemental materials may be included throughout the year as opportunities arise. There will be on-going assessment as well as writing assignments.
Grading Procedure:
50% = Vocabulary, Chapter & Unit Test & Projects 50% = Daily Grades, Homework, Notebook Checks, Labs, Quizzes, etc.
Course Requirements: Every student is responsible for and expected to follow all rules and guidelines set forth in the Hillcrest Middle School Handbook regarding attendance, tardy, and discipline policies.
Classroom Policies & Expectations: **Be prepared to start class when the bell rings. This means you are in your seat working on the daily science starter. **Bring Science Notebook and pencil to class everyday. **Raise your hand to speak. **Show respect to everyone in the classroom.
Supply List: **3--100 page Composition Notebooks (Black & White Marble) (NO SPIRALS) **Pens & Pencils **Highlighters **All supplies should be brought to class everyday."
Homework: Although written homework ma not be assigned on a daily basis, every student is responsible for reading over his or her notes or preparing for test & quizzes.
Science Notebooks: All students are required to keep a composition book for science. All assignments, notes, hand-outs, starters, and test will be kept in this notebook. No spiral notebooks are permitted. Composition notebooks have a black & white marbled cover and are bound. Students will need at least 3 composition books. Science notebooks will be graded periodically. This will be a major tool for students studying for science class.
Test: Tests are announced 4 - 5 days in advance and will be posted in the classroom.
Each of the following topics can be found in the Student / Parent Handbook:
**Homework Policy **Missed Work / Make-Up Policy **Attendance & Tardy Policy **Rules for Student Behavior **Consequences for Violating Class & School Rules / Policies **Procedures for Non-Instructional Routines
Conferences: At any time, of you would like to meet with me, please call the Guidance office to set up an appointment. (355-6114)
