Welcome to our class web site! My name is Meredith Burton and I teach fourteen wonderful first graders at Fountain Inn Elementary School in Fountain Inn, SC. In our classroom we focus on developing a caring classroom and working together as a class family. We observe our surroundings and learn from each other each day. We share ideas and try to bring joy to the lives of others in our community and our school.

Our school theme this year is "Under the Big Top." We are Burton's Bengals- or circus tigers! We will learn all about tigers this year as we perform great feats of learning in first grade. We are always busy working on a new project and we enjoy learning through hands-on experiences.

buttonIn January, we learned about winter and explored many aspects of the season. We also started an author study of Jan Brett. You can connect to her wonderful website by visiting our Favorite Web Sites page. We wrote a class book about our favorite Jan Brett books and we wrote letters to her.

At the end of January, we received a package from Eric Carle, another favorite author. He sent us a poster of one of his newest books, "Panda Bear, Panda Bear, What Do You See?" He also answered several of the questions we asked when we wrote to him in November. It was very exciting to get mail from a real author!

In February we studied Chinese New Year, Black History Month, and Dental Health. We are always very busy!

In March we studied space, including the sun, moon, and stars. We did a homework project on the phases of the moon. Check back here every day to see the current phase. May 17th is Technology Night at school. The first grade will be doing space presentations and the StarLab will be available for people to visit. The StarLab is like a miniature planetarium.

Now we are studying animals that hatch from eggs. We are incubating twelve chicken eggs in our classroom and we are hoping that some of them will hatch. We are taking good care of them, just as a mother hen would do. It takes 21 days for a chick to hatch. We are also learning about all kinds of other animals that hatch from eggs.

We have three chicks that hatched! They are named Cheeper, Hattie, and Chicken Licken. We love them and are amazed at how quickly they grow!
