Fun With Nursery Rhymes!

Bestselling author and literary consultant Mem Fox states that "rhymers will be readers" in her book Reading Magic. Based on research by experts in literacy and child development, she claims that children who know eight nursery rhymes by heart by the time they are four years old will be among the best readers by the time they are eight years old.

I have included this page on my website to emphasize the importance of nursery rhymes. We will be working on nursery rhymes in class throughout the school year but it is equally important that you as a parent get involved with your child and nursery rhymes. Below are several links to websites with nursery rhymes to read and sing. There are also a few sites with games to work on rhyming words. Please find an old notebook or folder and start a collection of nursery rhymes with your child. We will have sharing day every few weeks and your child can bring in a rhyme to share. Use the sites below to locate new rhymes and to print out pictures and rhymes for your child's collection.

Enchanted Learning This is a great website with lots of resources. Click on the link at the left and go to Rebus Rhymes where your child can read some familiar nursery rhymes presented with pictures and words. You can also print out copies of the nursery rhymes to begin your child's nursery rhyme book. Your child can even paint some of the nursery rhymes online. If you have time, take a look at what else this website has to offer.
Rhymes and Songs This website has a large collection of nursery rhymes. You can explore old favorites and some new ones too. There is music with many of the rhymes and some include animation.
Nicky's Nursery Rhymes Here is another very large collection of nursery rhymes. Many of the rhymes are presented with music. There are also pictures to print out and color for many of the rhymes. Keep looking for your favorite rhymes for your book.
NiteOwl The nursery rhymes on this site all have coloring pages you can print out. Each rhyme may have from one to six pages to print out. You can make individual books of some of the rhymes.
FunSchool This website offers a variety of online games organized by grade level. Since we are working on rhymes please look for Rhyme Time under kindergarten games. Your child can work on matching pictures and words that rhyme. Go ahead and explore some of the other games too. Let me know which you like the best.
Reggie Loves to Rhyme! This game is found on the Scholastic website which has many more resources for you to explore. Your child can pick different categories to explore rhyming words from home, store, and restaurant to the airport, museum, and zoo. A neat part of this game is that when you click on the pictures they are read out loud so your child can hear if the words rhyme or not.
Clifford's Interactive Storybooks This site is a part of the Scholastic Book Clubs site. Come here to listen to stories about Clifford the Big Red Dog. There are also some games to play and a link to Clifford's own website.
Children's Really Wild Zone This is the Science and Nature page of the BBC website. We found this site when looking for information about hibernating animals (Time to Sleep). There are lots of other interesting animals to explore also. You can also click on Fun and Games on the left hand side.
