Seventeenth Annual Challenge Day
Washington
Center students and staff enjoyed the 17th annual "Challenge Day” Friday,
September 28, 2007 on the Bob Jones University campus. This event
included Special Olympics Developmental Games designed specifically for
Washington Center’s special needs students. The Greenville County
Recreation Department helped to coordinate and sponsor the event along with
community support. Washington Center Physical Education instructor,
Cindy Brown, coordinated the program for the school. A rousing “Parade
of Athletes” began the festivities as the Washington Center students marched
into the new campus gymnasium to a prelude of patriotic music from the Bob
Jones University Concert Band, directed by Dr. Bruce Cox. Washington
Center students Lindsey Davies, Joshua Brownlee, Christopher Cole, Gregory
Ferguson, Andrew Miles, Michael Zudonyi, and Steven Martin opened the
ceremonies with the Pledge of Allegiance, the Special Olympic Oath and the
Lighting of the Olympic Torch. Developmental athletic events, carnival
town fun and picnic lunches rounded out the day’s activities. The
Awarding of Olympic Medals Ceremonies applauded each student’s brave
athletic attempts. The Washington Center students and their volunteers
reveled in the day of excitement and recognition.
Dinosaur Fun
Ms.
Claire Blouir’s Washington Center class is reveling in dinosaurs. The
special needs students are learning all about the extinct creatures through
games, stories, songs and art. Using a voice output device, class members
made the “dinosaur roar” as Ms. Blouir read an accompanying big book.
“Saturday Night at the Dinosaur Stomp” proved to be a rousing activity for the
enthusiastic students. As an craft activity, traced shoe soles were
transformed into “Shoeseratop” art projects. Students agreed that even
dinosaurs are yummy as they made claw shaped cookies partially dipped in
chocolate (“Muddy Dinosaur Prints”). Dinosaur fun abounds at Washington
Center.
Annual Pansy Sale
The
annual Washington Center Fall Pansy Sale is in progress. The special needs
students attending Washington Center participate in a Hortitherapy program in
which pre-vocational gardening skills are developed, headed by instructor Cathy
Bush. Seedlings are transplanted and tended by the students as part of
their functional curriculum. Currently the school is selling pansy flats
for $10.00 each. Vibrant fall pansy colors range from shades to purple to
radiant yellows. The program is self sustaining with proceeds reinvested
in purchasing seedlings for the spring flower sales. The sale continues
through the month of October. Please call Washington Center at 355-0250
for more information.
Boo in the School
On Wednesday, October 31, Washington Center will host the
annual "Boo in the School" event. Students dressed in a variety of
costumes will circulate classroom-to-classroom Trick or Treating using assistive
technology. Volunteers from Riverside High School and Christ Church
Episcopal will accompany the students during the spooky rounds for treats and
games. A Monster Bash is scheduled to wrap up the event with music,
dancing and awards for best costumes. Prior to the Boo in the School day,
the entire school completed in a door decorating contest. Donations of
candy, pudding, applesauce and juice are welcomed. In the afternoon,
guests from Dr. Bray’s Dental Office dressed in fun costumes are visiting
Washington Center bearing treats and smiles. Teachers Brooke Timms, Kelly
Bentfeld, Luci Floyd and McKenzie Riley are coordinating the frighteningly fun
event.
Family Night
Washington Center is planning a truly exciting PTA sponsored
Family Night event on Thursday, November 8, 5:30-7:00 pm. The annual event will
include a delicious hot dog dinner served by Texas Roadhouse with Andy the
Armadillo helping to join in the fun! Desserts are furnished by the
students attending the Daily Living program. $3.00 per person or $15.00 per
family purchases the meal and contributes to the school’s PTA. The Beck
Beta Club will host a mini carnival in the gym. A video of the school’s
successful Spring 2007 Walk n’ Roll fund raiser will be shown, inspiring
enthusiasm for the 2008 event plans. The Media Center will also hold a
Book Fair for purchases of a variety of books for holiday gifts. Teachers
have posted a wish list of books requested for their classrooms. Please
call Washington Center, 355-0250, for further information.
