Arts Magnet Program

Stone Academy of Communication Arts offers a rigorous scholastic curriculum enriched by instruction in art, music, drama, dance, and creative writing. Strings is offered as a pullout program for interested students.

Performing and visual arts, as well as writing, are incorporated into all subjects, connecting learning activities in academics to the arts. Music, skits, puppet shows, dance, and drawing are used in teaching core courses.

Each Friday, fourth and fifth grade students choose a club to attend for one class period. Clubs are offered in both art and academic areas .

Students are introduced to video production through daily live TV news shows produced by student crews. Jumpstart News is broadcast live from Stone's TV studio in the media center.

Encore classes, before-school and after-school enrichment activities in the form of private lessons are offered to interested students.

First graders perform after a residency with dance artist, Billie Franklin.
Artists-in-Residence

Artists-in-residence are provided in all art forms. Each grade level has an artist-in-residence in one art form. By the time a student goes through the fifth grade, he has experienced a residency in each art.

Third graders provide accompaniment during a dance artist-in-residency.More about the Artists-in-Residence Program

ABC Site

The ABC Program continues to provide professional development, artists-in-residence, and materials which support the arts-integrated curriculum.

Stone Academy has been designated an ABC (Arts in the Basic Curriculum) site by the South Carolina Arts Commission. Stone has been visited by teachers and administrators from many schools, including two groups from the Netherlands.
During several summers, teams from Stone have attended the Arts in Education Leadership Institute (AELI), at Winthrop University.  The institute is devoted to further developing the five-year strategic plan for renewing Stone's status as an ABC site. Other activities have included demonstrations of arts-integrated materials and a visit to historic Brattonsville.
In 2001-02, the ABC grant funded graduate credit classes for teachers in integrating resources at the Greenville County Museum of Art.

Exemplary Writing Program

Stone earned this distinction in the 1997-98, 1998-99, and 1999-2000 school years, from the South Carolina Department of Education. Stone is now in the Hall of Fame, sharing with other schools ways of integrating writing into the curriculum.  Writing across the curriculum is a vital part of the Communication Arts magnet program.
