Special Education - Resource

Every student in special education has an Individualized Education Program (IEP) outlining the services they will receive. In the Resource classroom, students receive additional instruction in the areas of reading, writing, and/or math. We use a reading program called Wilson Reading. Wilson Reading directly and systematically teaches students how to fluently and accurately decode, and the instruction is very interactive and multisensory. It is based on the multisensory language techniques used by Orton-Gillingham, the reading program used at Camperdown Academy.
Evidence shows that when direct, systematic code-based instruction is skillful implemented it is the most effective approach for problem readers. This program is based on successful experience with thousands of dyslexic students.

Speech-Language Therapy

The mission of speech-language services is to help students communicate in a manner that positively impacts their productive participation in the learning environment, home, local community and global environment. Speech-language pathologists at Sterling are involved in whole class interventions, A-Team, screenings, evaluations, and therapy. Students are served in the areas of articulation, phonology, oral motor, voice, fluency, and language. Special support programs include Sounds in Motion, Braidy the Story Braid, and EET Expanding Expression Tool. Speech-language services are provided to our Sterling students with speech-language disabilities. In addition, Sterling is also a location for private preschool services.
