DESCRIPTION

The Computer Science Lab at Southside is one of three fully equipped labs. In addition the school has a fully computerized library and has three computer mini-labs.

Southside students have won first places in programming competitions at Furman and Clemson Universities as well as first place awards in the regional science fair

EQUIPMENT

We're about to upgrade! In the new school we will have Pentium 4s with a Gig of RAM and 19" monitors.

For software we'll have SolidWorks CAD, and Adobe Creative Suite which includes products like Photoshop and Illustrator.

Lab Hours: The lab is normally open for individual student and teacher use at lunch time and for an hour after school every day except Wed.

COURSES

AP COMPUTER SCIENCE I
Meets the requirements of the AP Computer Science A test. Uses Java language.Computer Science II students working on a robotics project

AP/IB COMPUTER SCIENCE II
Meets the requirements of the AP Computer Science AB test and the IB SL test. Teaches students not just how to program but also how to design a major piece of software. Uses Java language.

Beowulf System

Southside has two Beowulf development systems named Joeys after Joey Echeverria the student who configured them. Each system has three nodes and is designed for developing specialized Beowulf software. Beowulfs are a type of super computer in which numerous ordinary computers are linked together using Linux software so that they run as one large super computer.

Beowulf Info

Available Software on All Machines: Microsoft Office 97, FrontPage 2000, Internet Explorer, Visual C++, One-on-One With the SAT, Understanding Math

Class Use of Lab: Teachers may sign up to bring a class to the lab except for periods 2B, 3B, and 4B. On 3B, and 4B small groups of students can be accommodated but not an entire class. The sign up calendar is on the wall just inside the East door.

PROCEDURES

1) Start -Up: The computers are equipped with battery backups (the rectangular boxes next to the monitors). These allow the computers to be shut down in an orderly manner in the event of a power failure. Turn the backups on first. Next turn on the monitors and finally press the large button on the front of the CPU or computer box under the table.

When the Novel banner appears check to see that it lists the computer's number as the user. The numbers are found on the front of CPU boxes under the table, for example 415LAB29. Click OK. There is no password.

2) Printing: The computers will print on the laser printer located in the far corner of the room under the robotics banner. A few of the computers are not connected. If printing is needed then move to a different machine. The printer uses copier paper. Normally a supply is located in the cabinet below the printer.

Note: Do not print out web pages. This consumes large quantities of toner. Student should only use the printers for outputting text based assignments. Web page information should be saved to floppy disks provided by the person saving the information.

3) Shutdown: During the week do not shut the computers down. If you are using the computers 4th period on Friday shut them down when finished. Use the shutdown option in the Start menu of Windows. When the computer is completely down turn off the battery back up. DO NOT SIMPLY TURN THE COMPUTERS OFF. This can scramble the information on the hard drive.

TROUBLESHOOTING

1) No Display: First try moving the mouse. This restarts the monitor after a few seconds if it has been automatically shut down by energy saving features. Check to see that the battery backup, monitor, and CPU box are all turned on. If you have moved the mouse and the monitor still shows a blinking amber light then try turning the monitor on and off. If all else fails use a different machine.

2) Battery Backup Emits a Shrill Sound: If the lab lights stay on and the sound subsides do nothing. Otherwise shut dawn all of the computers using the shut down feature in the Start menu. Turn off all the battery backups.

3) Computer Locks Up: If the computer locks up first try pressing the Ctrl Alt Delete buttons on the keyboard simultaneously. As a last resort press the restart button on the CPU box located under the table. This is the smaller of the two buttons.

4) The Computers Emit a Loud Noise When First Started: This is normal and will subside after a few minutes. Otherwise, it's best to shut the machine down using the Start menu of Windows.
