Third Grade
The major emphasis of the Third Grade Language Arts Curriculum is in
Reading
and Writing. Reading comprehension
is stressed throughout the curriculum. Students
use a variety of strategies to comprehend, interpret, analyze, and evaluate what
is read. Writing is incorporated
into the reading curriculum. Students
write for different audiences and purposes.
They use thinking maps for prewriting strategies and organization of
single and multi-paragraph papers.
The emphasis of third grade Social Studies is South Carolina History.
We study the beginnings of our state including the Native Americans and
the Revolutionary War. We also study
the Civil War, World War I and World War II.
We emphasize how each of the events has shaped our lives in
South Carolina
today.
The scope of third grade Science is very broad.
We study aspects of Earth Science, Physical Science, and Life Science.
We focus on the interrelationships of the areas of Science and relate
what we are learning to what is in the world around us.
Some of the topics include rocks and minerals, simple machines, matter
and energy, plants, and animals.
Third graders learn to write in cursive.
This is a big milestone in their school careers.
This is also one of the most exciting things that they learn how to do in
third grade.
The math curriculum strives to extend students understanding of mathematics
by building on the mathematical foundations that were established in the
previous years. Students will cover
topics from the 3rd grade state standards.
These include topics on whole numbers, fractions, decimals, measurement,
statistics and probability, geometry, rounding and estimating.
There is a major emphasis on problem solving.
