Second Grade
The
second grade curriculum is composed of Language Arts, Math, Science, and Social
Studies. Language Arts encompasses
reading, writing, grammar, and spelling. To
encourage students to read, we participate in the Accelerated Reader Program.
Each nine weeks, students can earn incentive rewards when they meet the
goal. The students have to answer
comprehension questions on the computer based on a story they have read.
The COMPASS computer program is also a program used to strengthen
reading. Also, the math curriculum
consists of addition, subtraction, regrouping, time, money, and measurement.
The COMPASS program also supports our math standards.
We use manipulatives as needed to insure that optimal learning occurs.
Manipulatives allow for hands-on learning.
Also, we use the Greenville County Science Kits to cover our curriculum
standards, as well as, our science books. The
kits are filled with experiments to increase the understanding of science
concepts. The second grade takes a
field trip to the
Roper
Mountain
Science
Center
each year to support the in class learning.
Lastly, our social studies curriculum encourages students to respect and
appreciate themselves as well as others. They
learn about other cultures, citizenship, maps, and important people in local,
state, and national government.
