DISTRICT GENERAL  INFORMATION

How Many Days Must My Child Attend School?

  A.  Lawful Absence

In accordance with the State Compulsory School Attendance Law, uniform rules for all schools have been adopted to assure that students attend school regularly.

Students are counted present only when they are in school, on homebound instruction, or present at any activity by the school principal.  The school year consists of 180 days. To receive credit, students must attend at least 85 days of each 90 day semester course and at least 170 days of each 180 day year course, as well as meet all minimum requirements for each course.  Accrued student absences may not exceed ten (10) days during the school year.  Any absences in excess of ten (10) may cause the student to lose credit for the year.

Because 170 days are the minimum required by the state, the first ten (10) absences may be lawful, unlawful, or a combination.  All absences beginning with the eleventh (11) must be lawful and will be excused if they fall within the following guidelines:

  1.  Personal illness of a child verified by a statement from a physician within two (2) days of the student's return to school.  Absences for CHRONIC  or EXTENDED illness will be approved only when verified by a physician's statement.

2.  Serious  illness or death of an immediate family member verified by a statement form the parents within two(2) days of the student's returning to school.

3.  Absence for religious holidays when approved in advance.  Such requests must be made to the principal in writing.

4.  Absences for extreme hardships approved by the principal.  Such approval should be prearranged when possible.
B.  Unlawful Absences

Any student absence, with or without the knowledge of the parent, which does not meet the conditions for a lawful absence shall be counted as unlawful and will not be excused.

C.  Procedures For Makeup Work

1.  Provisions for makeup of school work missed during excused absences shall be worked out with the teacher concerned at the earliest time possible, but should not exceed five (5) school days after the student returns to school.

2.  Makeup of school work missed during unexcused absences may be approved only with permission of the principal after consultation with the teachers concerned.

Questions regarding attendance rules should be directed to the principal of your child's school.

What Is Expected of Students Who Ride The Bus?

To ensure the safely of students who ride school buses, the School District of Greenville county has trained bus drivers in the Assertive Discipline Program.  This program is based on bus riders' adherence to rules for  appropriate conduct and certain consequences which will ensue if these rules are not followed.  Principals, bus supervisors and drivers have formulated these rules and consequences and will communicate them to the students.

Field Trips

Field trips are planned by the teacher to correlate with the curriculum taught in the classroom.  Written permission from a parent or legal guardian is required.  A child may be asked to pay a fee to cover expenses.  Parents are needed to serve as chaperones on most field trips.  We ask that younger children do not accompany parents who are serving as chaperones.  Safety of students is always a concern when students are away from campus.  Adult chaperones are to be obeyed and treated with respect at all times on field trips.

GENERAL INFORMATION

I.  Student Responsibilities

Citizenship

Good Citizen at Slater-Marietta are:

*  Courteous to everyone  - student, teachers,
custodians, food service workers, visitors and
    volunteers.
*  Respectful toward all people and all school
property such as desks, chairs, books, equipment
and playground.  Parents must pay for lost
    books or broken equipment.
*  Obedient to all teachers, staff and volunteers,
full of school spirit and show their pride in
    Slater-Marietta by keeping classrooms, halls,
    and playgrounds neat and clean.

Self discipline

Students should leave all toys, cell phones, electronic radios, tape players and CD players at home.  Toys include games, cassettes, basketballs, skateboards, baseballs, softballs, gloves and bats.  At special times, teachers may ask that some items be brought from home.  Unless asked for, items such as those mentioned will be taken by the teacher and kept until a parent comes for them.  Students in elementary schools are not allowed to have cell phones.  They will be taken and returned to the parent.

Students are expected to comply with the Code of Conduct set by the School District of Greenville County.

Students should show self-control by not fighting and by getting teacher help if there is a disagreement with another student.  Fighting, hitting or other physical acts of aggression may result in suspension.  There will be no trading or selling of any items on school property.  Students walk in the hallways, talk quietly in the building and take off hats when entering the building.

Weapons

Guns, blackjacks, chairs, bottles, star of Ninja, knives or any item used as a weapon are not allowed at school --  possession on school property is a serious offense.

Drug Policy

The policy of the School District of Greenville County and the State of South Carolina is if a student is caught with possession of drugs in the building, the principal shall recommend expulsion of a student if found to be in violation of the drug policy.

Proper Dress

Students should wear clothing which keeps them cool in hot weather and warm in cold weather.  Any clothing that calls undue attention to the student and disrupts learning is not appropriate.  All students are to dress according to the Dress Code set by the School District of Greenville County.

Cell Phones

Students in elementary schools are not allowed to have cell phones.  Cell phones will be taken and parents will be notified.

II.  Parent and Student Responsibility

Promptness

The first few minutes of each day and each class are the best time for learning.  Students need to be on time.  We begin promptly at 8:00a.m., and any child entering school after that time will be considered tardy unless a bus is late. Students and parents need to stop in the office to sign in before going to the classrooms.

Early Dismissals

The last part of each day is very important for receiving homework assignments, cleaning up the room and being ready for the next day.  Students should remain in class until 2:30p.m. We ask for parents' cooperation when making dental and doctor appointments so each child can benefit from a full day of school.  Anyone picking up a student early must sign the Early Dismissal Book.

Leaving School Early

If a child must leave school early, please write a note to the teacher explaining the situation.  For safety's sake, parents must come to the office to sign out their child if the student is leaving early.  Anyone other than the child's parent picking up a child must show a note from the parent and provide proper identification.  Reason for the early dismissal will be noted in the Early Dismissal Book.

  Getting Home Another Way

If a child is to leave school other than in the regular way, please write a note to the teacher explaining who he/she is to go home with and by what means:  bus, car, or walking.  Bus drivers will not allow non-bus-riding students to ride home with another child unless the child has a note.

Emergency School Closings

School cancellations during the school year are announced over all local radio stations.  Usually the announcements are given to the radio stations by 6:30a.m. If it becomes necessary to close school during the day, an announcement will be made over the radio prior to students being dismissed from school.  Please make emergency arrangements with neighbors if it is necessary to send students home during the day.

Telephone

Students will be permitted to use the telephone to make calls only in the case of emergency.  Students will not be called to the telephone except in case of an extreme emergency.  We understand sometimes in emergencies you need to get a message to your child.  The office will take the message and notify the teacher.

School Parties

Kindergarten through fifth grade have two school parties a year.  These are held near the end of the day, and parent volunteers assist teachers.  Birthday parties should not be given at school.

Homework

A reasonable amount of homework is assigned so students can practice the skills and concepts learned in class.  Sometimes projects related to classwork give children an opportunity to be creative, to use artistic and mechanical abilities.  Some projects can get the whole family involved in a learning experience.  Provide you child with a quiet, well-lighted area to do homework and set aside a regular time to do it.

Along with homework, youngsters should have time to participate in community and church activities.  Just plain free time to be a child is very important.

Visiting the School

All visitors need to stop by the office to get a Visitor Pass and sign in.

We want parents to be a part of the school community and visit from the time to time in the classes.  We ask you to arrange for this with the teacher in advance and not bring preschoolers or pets along.

Please remember smoking is not allowed on any Greenville County School Property.

Parents are invited to eat lunch at school.  We appreciate knowing a day in advance; just write a note to your child's teacher.

Transportation and Safety

The Sheriff's Department employs a crossing guard who will be on duty at 7:15 a.m. and 2:15 a.m. The guard also works with the Safety Patrol girls and boys who open and close car doors for car riders.

Car Riders

*  Students will enter and leave cars on the loading circle
in front of the main entrance.
*  In the afternoon, it will be necessary for cars to park in a
single file along the right side of the loading circle to pick up
students.  Cars are to remain in line.  Students will be
brought to the cars and must get it on the right side of the
car.  Safety patrols will help with this.
*  The crossing guard has the authority to issue tickets if
safely rules are broken.  Your cooperation is appreciated.

Please Remember:  Bakers Circle is a one way street from 7:30 - 8:30 a.m. and 2:30 - 3:00 p.m.

Walkers

Walkers must cross the road where the crossing guard is on duty.

Bus Riders

Buses will unload and load in the mornings and afternoons at the side door near Slater Road.

Parking

When visiting the school during loading and unloading times, please park in the parking lot so traffic will not be congested in the loading zone.  If a visitor parks in front of the school, traffic is obstructed and a safely hazard is created.

Conferences and Progress Reports

The faculty of Slater-Marietta feels it is important to talk to parents often about student progress.  Teachers send notes or call on the phone to report difficulties.  Parents may call to arrange conferences with teachers during planning time, before or after school, if they have a concern.

Formal conferences occur after the first nine-week grading period in the fall and after the third period in the spring.  Report cards are sent home at the end of each nine-week period.

  Lost and Found

A lost and found area is maintained in the gym  This includes a variety of belongings.  It is not uncommon at the end of the school year for many caps, gloves, sweaters etc. to go unclaimed.  When articles have been lost, students should check in the gym.  When visiting school, parents are also encouraged to check to see if articles have been found.  Unclaimed clothing will be donated to charity on June 12th.

III.  School Responsibilities

The Breakfast/Lunch Program

The cafeteria provides a nourishing, well-balanced breakfast and lunch each day.  While students are encouraged to eat the school lunch, they may bring a lunch from home.  Breakfast is free to all students.

Parents may apply for the free and reduced-price meal program available under the National School Lunch Program.  An application is given to each student.  The qualifying guidelines printed on the form will be used to determining eligibility of free or reduced-priced meals. Parents will be notified of eligibility in writing.  Breakfast or lunch money will be loaned in case of emergency for one meal at a time, not for purchasing snacks.  We expect the money to be repaid the next day.  No soft drinks may be consumed in the cafeteria.

Health Room

The Health Room is staffed by a Licensed Nurse every day.  The teacher will send any child who is not feeling well or has been hurt to the Health Room.

A Health Room Card is kept on file for every child.  This card supplies vital information to the nurse about whom to call in case of an emergency or special health problems the child may have.  It is necessary  for you to give the school information requested on the card.  The school will follow your directions on the Health Card enrollment form.  If we are unable to reach you and the child needs more than first aid, school personnel will exercise extreme care and caution if a decision involving the health or safety of your child must be made following an accident or other emergency.

The nurse will keep a record of the child's visit and will take his temperature or perform any minor first-aid necessary, depending upon his symptoms.  If your child is too ill or uncomfortable to remain in school, the nurse will notify you by telephone to come for him or her.  Parents are always contacted if the child has a fever of 100 or more.  School personnel will administer medication, and over-the-counter treatments only with written permission from a parent or guardian.  The physician's authorization must come with the prescription medication before the first dose is ever given.

  Head Lice Policy

At the first occurrence of active head lice the student will be sent home with a letter requesting treatment and nit removal.  The student's class and other students living in the home will be inspected for lice.  The student may return to class when lice are gone.  If nits are still present, a recheck (for possible re-infestation ) will be done in 10 days.  A second occurrence will follow the same procedure.

On the third occurrence of lice, and thereafter, the student will be dismissed and a letter will be sent to request treatment and inform the parents that all nits must be removed before the student may return to class.

If a student is found to have nits only and they are within 1/2 inch of the scalp, the parent will be sent a letter requesting lice treatment and nit removal.  Upon returning to school, if no lice are found, the student may reenter class.  However, if nits are still present, a recheck will be done in 10days to rule out re-infestation.

If a student is found to have nits only and they are not within 1/2 inch of the scalp, the parent will be sent a letter requesting nit removal.  The Child will be rechecked in 10 days to be sure lice are not present.

As always, any student who exhibits signs of possible lice infestation should be sent to the Health Room to be checked.
