Continuous Improvement Continuums Yearly Assessment
On May 7, 2008, 44 members of Simpsonville Elementary staff revisited the rubric for the School Portfolio Continuous Improvement Continuums.
Staff members discussed their school’s ratings. The staff then came to consensus on a number that represented where the school is for each element. The ratings and brief discussion for each Continuous Improvement Continuum follow.
Simpsonville Elementary staff rated their school a 4 in Approach, 4 in Implementation, and 4 in Outcome with respect to Information and Analysis.
Staff agreed that the following needs to happen at the school level with respect to Information and Analysis:
· Make changes in the programs to reflect positive trends (technology integration)
· Continue to share test data with parents and teachers in a grade level, but also with prior and future grade levels
· Adapt instruction based on test data.
· Enlist the school SIC to further assist with information sharing.
· Work toward a higher level of consistent implementation of new strategies classrooms based on data analysis.
· Continue innovative programs and exploration into processes to help prevent student failure
· Continue to practice strategies to improve student achievement in the spirit of the No Child Left Behind Act.
· An After-school and/or a Saturday tutorial program offered for Math and Language Arts
· Parent University offering evening workshops for parents in fall and spring.
· ESOL parent involvement due to growing numbers.
Student Achievement
Simpsonville Elementary staff rated their school a 4 in Approach, 5 in Implementation, and 4 in Outcome with respect to Student Achievement.
Staff agreed that the following needs to happen at the school level with respect to Student Achievement:
· Link instruction, assessment and curriculum (standards) in a continuous flow.
· Increase the number of mentors and tutors for our students
· Continue to attend practical and useful in-services
· Offer a K-5 motivational science enrichment program for 8 weeks (MAD SCIENCE)
· Continue to work toward improved student achievement through various strategies and methodologies
· Provide an after school ELA remedial computer program for 6 weeks for 4th and 5th graders - target students who scored Below Basic on PACT
· Provide a before-school math program to encourage math achievement for 3rd through 5th grade students.
Simpsonville Elementary staff rated their school a 4 in Approach, 4 in Implementation, and 4 in Outcome with respect to Quality Planning.
Staff agreed that the following needs to happen at the school level with respect to Information and Analysis:
· Continue analyzing work for alignment to standards
· Study effective instruction and assessment strategies to implement the standards.
· Implement effective instruction and assessment strategies in all subjects to improve student achievement
· Use results from MAP testing in 3rd – 5th grades to plan differentiated instruction
· Implement leadership decisions more effectively
· Improve communication and integration of all elements in the school
· Improve time management regarding meetings, email, all communications
· Saturday Academy
· MAD Science sponsored by our P.T.A.
· After-school Enrichment in Language Arts
· Science Lab Instruction
Simpsonville Elementary staff rated their school a 4 in Approach, 4 in Implementation, and 4 in Outcome with respect to Professional Development.
Staff agreed that the following needs to happen at the school level with respect to Professional Development:
· Continue offering Professional Development on-site
· Make professional development ongoing and meaningful.
· Use experts/own staff to teach Professional Development
· Information from survey will be used to plan for staff development needs
· Continue participation in in-services on new textbook series, Every Day Counts follow-up sessions, Intel, 4-Blocks workshops with Tom Roe, and Larson’s Math
· Continue regular grade level meetings and vertical team meetings
· Utilize the District Professional Development website
· MAP In-service Day
· Staff Development based on MAP testing results
· Staff Development on all new programs used in the school

Simpsonville Elementary staff rated their school a 4 in Approach, 4in Implementation, and 4 in Outcome with respect to Leadership.
Staff agreed that the following needs to happen at the school level with respect to Leadership:
· Study Teams/Action Teams are formed and given time to conduct research and to analyze the findings
· Leadership team will use findings of study teams to form a plan for continuous improvement putting special emphasis on those areas that are in most need of improvement.
· Everyone is kept abreast of the findings and of the comprehensive plan.
· Leadership Team meetings need to be a safe environment where opinions and ideas can be discussed freely.
· Implement recommendations that are made at the Leadership Team meetings.
· Include faculty in more shared decision making.
· SIC work with Action Teams and Leadership Council. Share SIC minutes with faculty.
· Communication between our school and “feeder” daycares could enable K-5 expectations to be communicated.
· Continue to improve communication between all staff members as appropriate
Simpsonville Elementary staff rated their school a 4 in Approach, 4 in Implementation, and 3 in Outcome with respect to Partnership Development. We have partnerships including: Cryovac, Caterpillar, Wal*Mart
Staff agreed that the following needs to happen at the school level with respect to Partnership Development:
· Increase partnership involvement within community
· Continue our partnerships with Cryovac, Caterpillar, and local churches
· Implement Family Literacy Night and Education Exploration Night as a means to reach parents and obtain their assistance and support.
· Track test scores of students that are tutored by persons from our business partners.
· Terrific Kids sponsored by the Kiwanis Club for Special Ed classes
· Super Star Math
· Junior Achievement
· USC Upstate classes with students working alongside our teachers in the classrooms
Simpsonville Elementary staff rated their school a 3 in Approach, 3 in Implementation, and 3 in Outcome with respect to Continuous Improvement and Evaluation.
Next Steps
Staff agreed that the following needs to happen at the school level with respect to Continuous Improvement and Evaluation:
· Periodic review of the test data is used to identify gaps in achievement
· Grade levels should prepare meaningful ways to assess student performance
· Continuous evaluation of teaching strategies and techniques based on test data
· Ongoing revision of curriculum to teach standards in more meaningful ways
· Prepare students for test format using PACT-like formats in formal testing
· To assure that final checklist is implemented assign a person (3rd) other than partner to check records

Evaluation Plan
The evaluation of the Simpsonville Elementary School action plan is designed around achieving adequate yearly progress toward 100% proficiency of all students in all subject areas, and the measurement of the strategies and activities to achieve the school’s three main goals which are to:
· Raise the academic challenge and performance of each student
· Teacher/Administrator Quality
· School Climate (Parent Involvement, Safe and Healthy Schools)
Evaluation of the Plan
· Goal 1: Raise the academic challenge and performance of each student
Objective 1: The percentage of students who meet or exceed their MAP Target Goal in Reading will increase by 2% annually from 2008-09 to 2012- 13.
Objective 2: The percentage of students who meet or exceed their MAP Target Goal in Math will increase by 2% annually from 2008- 09 to 2012-13.
Baseline Data Student Growth Summary – Fall 2007 to Spring 2008:
MAP READING – 172 of 309 students tested in 2nd through 4th or 55.6% of current 2008-09 3rd to 5th grade students met Target Growth Goal
Grade 2 54 of 92 students tested 58.7% met Target Growth
Grade 3 68 of 129 students tested 52.7% met Target Growth
Grade 4 50 or 88 students tested 56.8% met Target Growth
MAP MATHEMATICS – 172 of 307 students tested in 2nd through 4th or 56% of current 2008-09 3rd to 5th grade students met Target Growth Goal
Grade 2 49 of 92 students tested 53.3% met Target Growth
Grade 3 70 of 128 students tested 54.7% met Target Growth
Grade 4 53 or 87 students tested 60.9% met Target Growth

§ Encourage greater parent participation in classroom enrichment programs and P.T.A. activities such as Build-a-book, ESOL P.T.A. Parent Group and Tutoring.
§ Conduct monthly SIC meetings
§ Schedule teacher-parent conferences
§ Involve Hispanic parents in our school activities and provide translators
