DISCUS
DISCUS, South Carolina's Virtual Library, is available for all Southside High School students to use during school and at home. Resources such as, Encyclopedias, Periodicals, and more are available. Access at home requires a password. Please see the Media Center for a password.


Media Staff

Hours
The Media Center is open from 8:00 a.m. until 4:15 p.m. every school day.  Students must have a signed agenda to enter the Media Center during a class period.  Students may use the Media Center before and after school without a pass. In the even to standardized testing or other special events the Media Center may be closed. 

 

 

Circulation Policy
Print materials are circulated to students for 14 days.  Students are reminded monthly of overdue materials by means of notices sent to fourth period teachers.  Additionally, students will receive overdue notices weekly via e-mail.  End of the year report cards will be held for students who owe fines.  

Media Center (individual student use)
Students are encouraged to use the Media Center throughout the day.  Passes are required before and after school. During the regular school day, students must have a signed agenda to use the Media Center.  Passes may be written for research or school assignments only.  Passes should be written only by the subject area teacher and should include the work to be accomplished.

 

Our Library Media Center (whole class use)
 
Teachers should consult with one of the media specialists to sign  up for their classes to use the Media Center.  The Media Specialists offer teachers assistance in using information resources, planning research projects, and incorporating information skills into the classroom curriculum.  Teachers are responsible for class discipline in the Media Center.  With prior approval from a Media Specialist, teachers may send a maximum of five students from a classroom.  Each student must have a signed pass with the assignment clearly indicated.  

Substitutes
Substitutes are not permitted to write passes to the Media Center or to bring classes to the Media Center unless they have consulted a Media Specialist in advance. Laptop carts are not to be checked out by substitutes.  Unless previously arranged with a Media Specialist, teachers may not leave Media Center work as the lesson plan for a substitute. Please do not ask a Media Center staff to make copies for classroom use.

 

Computer Use
The Media Center is automated both for Media Center management and checkout.  Networked computers are available for students and teachers to use for research and word processing.  A variety of databases and access to the Internet are available.  Teachers wanting to use the computer area only should sign up to use either computer lab 100 or 221.  Please be sure you have read the GCSD Acceptable Use policy
