Congratulations
to 7th grader Olivia Balkcum, who placed 3rd in her
grade level in the annual Solicitor's Office Anti-Drug
Poster Contest. Her work will be printed along with 12
other selected GCSD middle school students' work in the
2012 Solicitor's Office Anti-Drug calendar. Winning
students were honored in a ceremony on Oct. 28 at the
Greenville County Solicitor's Office. This long-running
contest, which the Solicitor's Office funds with drug
forfeiture money, gives winning students savings bonds
to reward their hard work and positive messages. Winning
entries for the calendar were
chosen from more than 400 middle school students' works
submitted from Greenville and Pickens Counties, and
middle schools in these counties will receive calendars
for distribution in December. We are proud of Olivia for
representing Sevier in this year's calendar!

The girls had their first girls only breakfast book
club on Thursday at 7:45 AM. Sixth grade ELA
teacher, Vicky Gill, led the discussion with close
to 30 hungry, chatty girls. The group sipped on hot
chocolate and munched on mini quiche and cinnabons
while they shared their thoughts on the recently
released Twilight series movie, the Hunger Games
series and upcoming movie, and shared with
each other books they are currently reading.

Flag Retirement Ceremony
Pics
Students observed a Flag Retirement ceremony for the
Disposal of Unserviceable American Flags recently. The ceremony
was conducted by the James Howe-Luke Cisson Detachment 1145,
Marine Corps League. The set of rules applying to civilian flag
courtesy, known as The Flag Code, was established in June 1923
and officially sanctioned in 1942 as Public Law 829.
Approximately 20 flags were burned as part of a community
service. Sevier hopes to continue this ceremony as an
annual event.
