About the Principal

During spring break in March, we visited the Cape Canaveral Space Center in Florida. Mrs. Arrington has worked in the School District of Greenville County for twenty-seven years. She has been at Sara Collins Elementary as the Assistant Principal for the last five years. She taught fourth grade for twelve years and was a teacher in the Greenville County Gifted Program for seven years. She has also taught at Beck Academy. She is trained in both the International Baccalaureate Primary and Middle Years programs. She is a graduate of North Greenville College, Furman University, and Converse College.

Mrs. Arrington has two daughters. She also has two granddaughters and a grandson. Her husband, Dennis, has worked as a Civil Engineer for 35 years. Mrs. Arrington likes to travel, fish, read, use the computer, and learn new things.

She believes obtaining a good education is the best way to plan for the future.

Dear Sara Collins Community,

Thank you so much for a great start to the 2005-2006 school year.

We are so fortunate to have parents that support our efforts to teach.

I especially want to thank all the parents and children who started the school year early in August by working on the school grounds.  Thanks to these parents, we have benches on the playground, difficult landscaping chores completed, and basketball goals in place.  Chaz Thomas recently installed new landscaping along the Parkins Mill Road side of our campus.  We appreciate his hard work.

The track has been completed and we are in the process of ordering new playground equipment for the upper grades.

We appreciate all the parents who are dropping their children off at our front door.  Your cooperation ensures the safety of your child.  A special thanks to Mr. Lennon, Mrs. Clark, Dr. Wilson and all parent volunteers for helping with the morning drop-off.

We also have several new programs that will enhance and improve your child’s learning experiences.  We will begin MAP testing in October.  This computerized test will give us feedback within a couple of days on how well your child is progressing in reading, math, and science.  This year we will test Grades 3-5. Next year we will test all grades.

To improve PACT science scores we have started several processes.  We now have a science lab teacher for all fourth and fifth grades.  We are working on a distance learning science project with Roper Mountain Science Center.  We plan to incorporate more science into our IB Units of Inquiry.  Every classroom teacher will be joining the South Carolina Science Council.  Look for information soon about the new science clubs.

We encourage parents to help us make children aware of science in their everyday lives.  A fun family activity can be found at Roper Mountain Science Center every second Saturday.  There is a modest fee for children (6-12) and adults.  Children five and under are admitted free.

Freaky Friday is just around the corner.  Mrs. Geddie and Mrs. Henry’s enthusiasm is contagious.  Even I am counting the days until October 7.  I hope that all parents and children will join us for a fun-filled evening.

If you have any questions or concerns about your child or our school programs, please, let me know.  I will be more than happy to meet with you.

Alice Arrington, Principal
