AP SCHOLARS 2010

National Merit Semifinalists

Speech 4A Championship

  Riverside won the 4A State Speech Championship at Irmo High School in  Columbia on March 4 and 5, 2011.  The tournament was sponsored by the South Carolina State Forensic Coaches’ Association.  Twenty-eight of our students placed.  State Champions include:  Brian Chou- State Oratory Champion; Michael Cruciger- State Children’s Literature Champion, and Lorenzo Barberis Canonico- State Impromptu Champion.  Special awards were also given to outstanding first year students.  Those named Best Novice in their individual events included:  Nida Ansari- Best Novice Congressional Debater; Mariana Meshreky- Best Novice Children’s Literature Interpreter; and Gracie Studart- Best Novice Prose Interpreter.

   Those Riverside students who placed were as follows:   In Varsity Lincoln-Douglas Debate-  Lorenzo Barberis Canonico- Quarter finalist; in Novice Lincoln-Douglas Debate- Deborah Chen, Niki Driver and Orrod Zadeh- Quarterfinalists; In Public Forum Debate- Judith Lin and Kevin Lee- Semi-finalists;  in Congressional Debate- 3rd place- Nida Ansari; 4th place- Kerry Yan; 5th place- Rhett Reese, and Best Presiding Officer- Jaiwei Zang;

In Original Oratory- Brian Chou- 1st place;  Michael Cruciger- 2nd place; in International Extemporaneous Speaking- Charlotte How- 5th place; in Duo Interpretation- Brandon Ospina and Paulina Gallagher- 5th place; Marian Meshreky and Divya Khandke- 6th place; in Prose Reading- Brian Chou- 3rd place; Gracie Studart- 4th place; in Children’s Literature- Michael Cruciger- 1st place; Marina Meshreky- 2nd place; Divya Khandke- 3rd place; Paulina Gallagher—4th place and Judy Chen- 6th place; in Poetry Reading-Paulina Gallagher- 6th place; in Impromptu Speaking- Lorenzo Barberis Canonico- 1st place; Shelby Wiggins- 2nd place;  Orrod Zadeh was also a finalist although only 3 places were given in this event.
