Oakview Elementary Nominated for National Blue Ribbon Schools Program

GREENVILLE, SC - Oakview Elementary School has been nominated as one of five South Carolina schools to compete in the National Blue Ribbon Schools Program. The nomination was announced today by the State Department of Education.

The National Blue Ribbon Schools Program, which was modified in 2001 to correspond with the goals of the federal No Child Left Behind Act, allows the State Department of Education to submit five nominees that meet one of two criteria:

  • Schools that draw at least 40 percent of their students from disadvantaged backgrounds and show dramatic improvement in test scores to high levels in read (language arts or English) and mathematics.

  • Schools, regardless of their demographics, that achieve in the top 10 percent of schools in the state.

Oakview Elementary, with an enrollment of about 1,100 students, along with Thomas C. Cario Middle School and Lexington High School, was nominated based on the second criterion. All three schools performed at the top 10 percent in the state and the difference in student achievement between demographic subgroups was reduced.

Oakview Elementary was named a National Blue Ribbon School in 2000-01 based on the previous criteria for selection. The school is also a Palmetto’s Finest School and recipient of the Red Carpet Schools Award.

Two other schools, Brown’s Ferry Elementary School and Seven Oaks Elementary School, were identified under the first criterion. All five nominated schools not only met the basic criteria, but also scored higher against those criteria than other schools.

All nominees had to have made Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) under NCLB for the 2004-05 school year, and also will have to make AYP for the 2005-06 school year to be eligible for recognition as National Blue Ribbon schools.

The National Blue Ribbon Schools Program of the U.S. Department of Education honors public and private K-12 schools that are either academically superior in their states or that demonstrate dramatic gains in student achievement.

Greenville County Schools has 12 previous National Blue Ribbon Schools winners. They are Augusta Circle Elementary, Baker’s Chapel Elementary, Bethel Elementary, Brushy Creek Elementary, Buena Vista Elementary, Hillcrest Middle, League Academy, Mauldin High, Mitchell Road Elementary, Oakview Elementary, Pelham Road Elementary, and Taylors Elementary.

The 2006 winners will be announced in Washington next fall, and the recognition ceremony will be held in Washington in November.

21 Schools, Two Career Centers Earn Palmetto Gold and Silver Awards

Twenty-one Greenville County schools and two career centers have earned cash awards recognizing high levels of academic achievement and high rates of student academic improvement through the Palmetto Gold and Silver Awards program.

The Education Accountability Act established the Palmetto Gold and Silver Awards Program to recognize and reward schools that attain high levels of absolute performance and schools that attain high rates of improvement. The specific criteria used to identify recipient schools are established by the Accountability Division of the Education Oversight Committee (EOC).

The financial award is determined by several factors, including the type of award received, student enrollment, student attendance, teacher attendance and dropout rates.  The minimum amount for a Gold award is $1,500, and the minimum for a Silver award is $1,000.
