Students, staff and parents are
all welcome to check out books and materials from our library. Students and
staff are automatically issued a library card. Parents too may ask to be
added as a patron by visiting the circulation desk.
Students and parents check out books for a week at a time. Students in kindergarten and first grade may borrow one book at a time, while 2nd grade students may check out two books every time they visit the library. (First grade may check out two books after winter break). 3rd, 4th and 5th graders may have three books. No more than one "drawing" or popular series book may be checked out per visit due to the high demand for these books. While we do not charge fines, we do encourage students to return their books on time and in good condition. Please let us know if your child cannot find his or her book. We do not let students continue to check out until they return their book(s) or pay to replace them. When a book is overdue, we send a reminder home with the student.
LOST BOOKS
If a library book is lost, please come to the library and tell us. The first
thing we will do is check our shelves to make sure it hasn't been returned
without your knowledge. It is the responsibility of each child to take good
care of the books that are checked out by him/her. Unfortunately, books do
get lost or damaged and will have to be replaced. The cost of an average
book is $15.00.
WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW ABOUT
OUR LIBRARY CURRICULUM
The Oakview Media Center operates on a fixed/flex schedule. Kindergarten
through second grades have scheduled or "fixed" times to visit the media
center each week. Third, fourth and fifth grade teachers schedule class
visits to enhance the subject area curriculum along with information
literacy skills taught by the media specialist.
We all know that children learn as they are developmentally able. With that in mind, the basic curriculum in our media center emphasizes different information skills for each grade level and constantly builds on prior learning. Information literacy gives students the skills they need to be able to find information on their own. As much as possible, the skills learned in the media center coordinate with classroom activities to add real life meaning for the students.
