Oakview Guidance Program
The mission of Oakview Elementary’s Guidance Department is to provide a comprehensive, developmental counseling program addressing the academic, career, and personal/social development of all students. School counseling services can contribute to the personal growth, educational development, and emotional well-being of students. Research suggests that counseling services can have long-term effects on a child's well-being, prevent a student from turning to violence, and improve a student's academic achievement. Studies on the effects of school counseling have shown positive effects on students' grades, reducing classroom disruptions, and enhancing teachers' abilities to manage classroom behavior effectively.
Classroom guidance lessons are held once a month by Allyson Blackwell (kindergarten – 2nd grade) and Gwen Daughtry (3rd grade – 5th grade). Classroom Guidance lessons are based upon the South Carolina Comprehensive Guidance and Counseling Program Model which focuses on three areas: learning to live (personal/social), learning to learn (academic), and learning to work (career). These three areas focus on responsible decision making, coping strategies, self understanding, and career development. Counselors sponsor several programs which help needy children in our school community and in local homeless shelters. At the beginning of the school year, they have the “Fill-a-Backpack” program. This is a time when parents can purchase various school items to give to children who do not have the necessary school supplies. During the school year, we have “Books for the Homeless.” Parents can purchase or donate new books, and students can donate their extra change. All books go to children in local homeless shelters. Every year, hundreds of books are taken to homeless children to give them the opportunity to have books of their own. At Christmas, we partner with The Salvation Armyto help make the holidays brighter for hundreds of local children. Counselors are involved with standardized testing. Mrs. Blackwell is the School Test Coordinator for ITBS in the fall for second graders and PASS in the spring for third-fifth graders.
