New PTSA
Newsletter Format
In order to save money and trees, our newsletter has gone
electronic. Hopefully, our goal is to put the newsletter out at least
once a month. It should be shorter and "friendlier." This
E-Newsletter will be linked on the home page of the website and will also be
sent out by our Northwest News Group. You can sign up for that on the
website. I hope you enjoy this new format. If you would like to
contribute to the newsletter, send your submissions to
jroe@greenville.k12.sc.us
(Jim Roe, editor).
New School Hours and Lunch Accounts
All Greenville County Schools, including Northwest Middle,
now begin classes at 8:30 a.m. We need all students, including car riders
and walkers, to arrive at school no later than 8:20 so students have enough
time to go to their locker and get to class. Morning announcements begin at
8:25 and class begins promptly at 8:30. We need your help to make this
possible.
Students need to pay into their lunch account first thing in
the morning. Students who do not pay into their account in the morning will
have to wait in line at lunchtime. By not paying ahead of time, the lunch
line slows down and all students end up waiting to eat. We remind students
in the morning and appreciate your support.

IB
Middle Years Program
by Lori Mason
Northwest Middle School partners with Travelers Rest High
School to offer the IB Middle Years Program. This program begins in 6th
grade and lasts through 10th grade. Students who complete all of the
requirements for this program will be awarded the MYP Certificate at the end
of 10th grade. All 6th through 8th grade students at NWMS are involved in
the IB Middle Years Program automatically because we are an International
Baccalaureate World School.
Through this program, students have opportunities to learn
with an international perspective. To qualify for the MYP Certificate, a
student must:
-
Score well on MYP assignments given by their teachers
-
Complete and document Community Service Hours each year of
6th through 10th grades
-
Complete a Personal Project (10th grade)
Community Service documentation forms are available on
the NWMS IB MYP webpage (http://www.greenville.k12.sc.us/northwst/ibmyp/)
and should be returned to Mrs. Bailey in the library. Please encourage
your child to document any hours spent helping others in the community.
Hours may be counted for lots of activities at church and sports or band
performances. 6th graders should document at least 10 hours. 7th graders
should document at least 15 hours. 8th graders should document at least
25 hours.
Student Council
Student Council elections are coming up. Applications
are being accepted for President, Vice President, Secretary, and
Sergeant-at-Arms. Students who wish to run for office should obtain an
application from Mrs. Cleveland or Mr. Jackson. Applications are due by noon
on Wednesday, September 1, 2010. To qualify to run for office, a student may
not have any referrals during middle school and must have had all C's or
above on last year's report cards.
Once candidates are approved to run for office, campaigning
will begin on September 7. Candidates will present their speeches on
September 15 at assemblies for all three grade levels. Elections for
school-wide offices as well as team representatives will take place on
Friday, September 17 during social studies classes.

Music
Notes
After a summer of silence, the band room at Northwest is
being filled with music once again. The seventh and eighth grade bands are
already hard at work, shaking off their summer "chops" and preparing for a
year of great performances. The sixth grade band is learning the
fundamentals of music theory, and they will soon be starting to make those
first sounds (albeit not entirely musical) on their instruments. Band
students and parents are reminded to view the band website for information.

Guidance News
P. Barber, N. O'Connor, F.
Jackson
To: All Parent/Guardians
Your
child will have the benefit of participating in our career guidance program
as mandated by the Education and Economic Development Act (EEDA
legislation), Pathways to Success. EEDA states that “counseling and career
awareness programs on cluster of study must be provided to students in
sixth, seventh, and eighth grades.” This program will provide students a
“greater exposure to career information and choices.”
As eighth graders, your child
will be asked to develop an Individual Graduation Plan and select a
preferred cluster of study. To help with this process, I hope to make all
students aware of the 16 career clusters, career options and help them gain
skills necessary to be successful in school and in the work place.
Students will participate in
various career development activities during the week. Career activities are
completed during advisory. Also, various guest speakers will come into
classes sothat students can relate what they are learning to real world
careers. Eighth grade students will take the EXPLORE assessment to help them
identify areas of interest. Also, some eighth graders will have the option
of participating in our job shadowing program in February.
Sixth & seventh graders will take
a career assessment provided by the South Carolina Occupational
Informational System (SCOIS). These assessments will offer immediate results
that you, as parents, will have access to via the internet or by calling me.
Students will also be able to use their portfolio developed on these
Internet sites throughout their school career. We will have our annual
career day that will take place in February 2011. Please call the guidance
office if you are interested or know someone interested in participating in
any of our career activities. If you have any questions about how you can be
involved in your child’s career exploration, please contact me at
864-355-6916 or
fjackson@greenville.k12.sc.us
I look forward to working with
your child and learning about their interests.
Sincerely,
Furman S. Jackson,
Career Development Facilitator
Suggestions for Parents
on Test Taking
1. Provide a quiet,
well-lit area for your child to study.
2. Set aside specific times during the day for your child to
study.
3. Work with your child while he/she studies.
4. Listen to your child and offer assistance when possible.
5. Be aware of your child's strengths and weaknesses. Challenge
your child in order to hold his/her attention.
6. Praise your child. DO NOT emphasize failures.
7. Call the teacher to find out how you can better assist your
child with his/her classes. Insist that your child assume the
responsibility for his/her learning.
8. Have fun with your child. Enjoy spending time together, but
still move toward the goal of improving the child's academic
success.

Health Room Policy Changes
Beginning in August 2010
Due to
changes in South Carolina policies governing the administration of
prescription medication we will no longer have a 10 day grace period before
written physician authorization is required for all prescription
medications.
-
Parents are required to
bring prescription medication to school and provide form MED-1 before
any prescription medication may be left at the school.
-
If your child must
self-administer medication at school form MED-2 is required before
medication is brought to school.
-
A parent may provide written
authorization for over-the-counter medication to be kept and
administered in health room using form MED-3
All
Health Services procedures and guidelines and these forms are available at

Be
a Panther Patron
Our goal is to have as many parents, grandparents, and
friends making an outright gift to Northwest for the purpose of funding and
providing needed resources while diminishing the need for direct sales type
of fundraisers. By making a tax deductible gift directly to Northwest
Middle, 100% of your support stays at Northwest! With the typical catalog
sales fundraiser, approximately half of the money goes back to the catalog
company.
Last year, our 2009-10 Panther Patrons were:
Julie Carson Bayne, Carson's Nut and Bolt, Jay and
Jennifer Burgess, Louis and Jane Dibridge,
Rocky and Cheryl Dreibrodt, Mike and Giavonni Gibson, Jeff and Carolyn
Jackson, Jason and Deb Keller,
William and Tammy Marchbanks, Babara Nalley, John and Dixie Neff, William
