The IB Learner Profile
The International Baccalaureate is
a continuum of international education, including: the Primary Years Program
(PYP), the Middle Years Program (MYP), the Diploma Program (DP), and Life
long learning. Northwest received authorization as an IB World School in June
2005.
What is the International Baccalaureate Middle Years Programme (IB MYP)?
The Middle Years Programme is a middle school academic program that is part
of the International Baccalaureate Organization (IBO). The IBO is a chartered
foundation that is a private non-governmental organization recognized by the
council of Europe. Because of the high standards and global accountability the
IBO has gained worldwide prestige and acceptance.
The MYP is specifically designed to serve students in the 11-16 range. It
provides a framework of academic challenge and life skills appropriate to this
stage of adolescence. The MYP focuses on the student's intellectual and social
development along with teaching an understanding of the student's own history
and global awareness in each subject area.
There are eight core disciplines in the IB MYP.
•Arts
•English
•Foreign Language
•Humanities
•Math
•Physical Education
•Science
•Technology
The
IBMYP curriculum is specifically designed for the unique needs of 11 to 15 year
olds at a time when they need to develop good learning habits, self-confidence
and a thorough understanding of their academic subjects.
This student-centered program both embraces and transcends traditional school
subjects by helping students see the connections between the academic
disciplines.
The IBMYP philosophy includes ALL middle school students.
It is based on the best available research and collaboration of practitioners
from all over the world.
All
students will continue with the high quality academic standards of the
SC
State Curriculum Standards. Through the Middle Years Program, students will
begin to access these academic objectives through a variety of cross-curricular
themes.
IBMYP:
•Promotes
responsible global citizenship, while preparing students for their future
•Provides
inter-cultural awareness for all members of the school community
•Focuses on
rigorous academics
•Facilitates
communication for the development of interdisciplinary, thematic instruction so

•Calls for
students to develop higher level thinking skills and important life skills
•Provides
assessment criteria and moderation of assessment
