Course Grading

Greenville County Schools changed its course grading scale effective in the 2000-01 school year to comply with State requirements to provide consistency across South Carolina. This is especially important for determining high school students' eligibility (based on grade point ratio) for college and for scholarships.

Numerical grades, based on the grading scale presented in the Uniform Grading Policy, are reported on all report cards and progress reports from first quarter beginning in the second grade through graduation with the exception of elementary related arts and handwriting.

Uniform Grading Policy Numerical Grade Range

  • 93 – 100 A
  • 85 – 92 B
  • 77 – 84 C
  • 70 – 76 D
  • 69 and below F

High School Students and Middle School Students Taking High School Courses for Credit

A grade of 70 or above is required to receive a unit of credit toward the graduation requirement of 24 units.

  • The state’s Uniform Grading Policy established the numeric value for an “F” in a Pass/Fail course as a 62.
  • Students who withdraw from a class after the allowable number of days stated in the Uniform Grading Policy and without approval of school administrators will be assigned an F with a numerical value of 62.
  • Students who do not receive credit due to excessive absences will be assigned an F with a numerical value of 62.

Students and parents need to choose courses carefully. Students who withdraw from a course after five days in a 90-day course or 10 days in a 180-day course will receive a grade of 62 and zero quality points. The F, with its accompanying zero quality points, will be included in the student's grade point ratio (GPR).

A course in high school cannot be retaken except if the student earns a D or an F. The course may be retaken no later than the next academic year. Both grades will be calculated into the student's GPR.

Numerical grades, based on the grading scale in the Uniform Grading Policy, are reported on all report cards and progress reports.
