2008-2009 NewsEighth Grade DanceOn Friday, May 29, the eighth grade students danced and socialized at their annual eighth grade only dance. Sports BanquetLakeview hosted a Sports Banquet on Tuesday, May 26, 2009 for all students that participated in athletics during the school year. Lakeview students and their parents enjoyed a spaghetti dinner and received awards during the banquet. Photos... Career DayThank you to all the participants in Lakeview's Career Day on Friday, May 22. The students were able to rotate and listen to four different career speakers in 30 minute increments for a total of two hours. There were a wide variety of careers represented. The Courtyard as a ClassroomThe teachers are already beginning to utilize the courtyard as a classroom for our students. Thanks again to all the volunteers and Trinity Community Church for all your hard work in our courtyard and the entire Lakeview campus. All the trees, bushes, flowers, and new mulch look beautiful! A Big Thanks to Trinity Community Church on Old BuncombeMany thanks to Trinity Community Church on Old Buncombe Road for supplying the delicious spaghetti dinner that was served to the parents, students, and teachers during Community Night on April 30. The desserts were as scrumptious as they were gorgeous! Lakeview really appreciates everything Trinity Community has done this year! Annual Community Night at Lakeview H.O.G. Day on May 2nd from 9 AM - 12 NoonHands on Greenville awarded Lakeview Middle School a grant to allow 70 -75 volunteers to join the school's School Improvement Council (SIC) efforts in their beatification project. Brian Howell, SIC Chair, wrote a grant asking for help with planting, weeding, spreading mulch and planting seed on the school grounds to enhance our curb appeal. We were thrilled to have all of these wonderful people at our school on Saturday, May 2nd from 9-12. All Lakeview Community members, parents, students and businesses were invited to participate or donate a plant, bush or tree. The grounds of the school look so beautiful! In particular, thanks to the Hands on Greenville volunteers that came out to work and show their support to Lakeview! 6th Graders Studying Energy Transformation and Simple MachinesDuring mid-April, Lakeview 6th graders in Shannon Shennan's and Demarrias Rock's classes are studying simple machines and energy. They are starting a construction project in which students build a rollercoaster, or a ferris wheel, or a wind mill, or a water wheel, or a model of Lake Hartwell Dam, etc. to show energy transformation and simple machines. 3rd Quarter Honor Roll RecognitionThe following lists of students by grade level made the A or A/B Honor Roll for the 3rd Quarter. Battle of the Books All
6th graders participated in Lakeview's first 'in-house'
Battle of the Books competition. In January, students
were introduced to the books they would be reading at an
assembly. Various incentives were provided to keep the
students reading including a poster competition, a team
name competition, and the earning of beads for a wrist
cord for every book read. The last two weeks of March
were used for the competitive questioning rounds.
Thirty-four teams began the competition and only one
team won. The Battle of the Books' champions were
Adrianna Black, Lewis Gregory, Tijuana Johnson, Kallen
Miles, Jordan Parham, Maria Ruiz. The event was
sponsored by 6th grade teachers Beth Huguley, Maureen
Phend, and Edward Anderson.Math Counts Competition Peace Garden WorkThank you to all the people that helped with the courtyard (Peace Garden) cleanup last Saturday. It looks fantastic. The three water features are going to be beautiful. Your hard work is greatly appreciated. There will be no cleaning this Saturday. We will wait until after April 15th to start planting. Start gathering plants, bushes, flowers and flower pots to donate for our “Peace Garden” beautification project. We will let you know when our next work day will be.

Student Attendance Best in the District!The students at Lakeview Middle had the best attendance increase of any middle school in all of Greenville County School District! Lakeview won the 2008-09 Attendance Blitz by increasing its attendance from 94.82% for the 1st semester in 2007-08 to 96.18% in 2008-09. Fantastic job! Black History Month ProgramBlack History Month was celebrated at Lakeview with an incredible program on Thursday, February 26. Thanks so much to Alissa Caldwell for her beautiful choreography work and drum playing. Thanks as well to Mr. Daniels for planning the program and all his hard work and practice with the students. Students... Photos... Beta Club InductionThe Beta Club inducted its new members on Friday, February 20 during 4th period. Welcome new members! List of new members inducted Photos... Furman Fundraiser for LakeviewPhi Mu Alpha, the music fraternity at Furman University, sponsored a benefit concert for our band and strings program on Sunday, February 15. This is the first year they made their annual "modern music concert" into a benefit and they chose us! They raised $300 for our program and many of the music students have volunteered to come work with our students as music tutors. Kate Brueck, the band and strings director, was allowed to speak to the attendees during the fundraiser to thank them for their donations. Mrs. Brueck is so excited!
Valentine's Day DanceStudents at Lakeview danced the afternoon away at the Valentine's Day Dance after school on Friday, February 13. Photos... Course Catalogs Region Band on TrumpetCongratulations to Zach Snyder, a 7th grader, for making Region Band on Trumpet in Greenville. This accomplishment is tremendous! Zach is the first student to make Region Band from Lakeview Middle in at least 12 years! Kudos to Zach and Mrs. Brueck! Gingerbread HousesBefore Winter Break, Mrs. Schiferl and Ms. Wheaton's math classes made Gingerbread Houses. The sixth-grade students worked hard in finding surface area of a rectangular
prism for their projects. They had to cut out the net, measure
in centimeters and multiply decimals to find the surface area.
Then they could tape the rectangular and triangular prism
together and glue on their graham crackers with frosting. They
also had to include a pattern of candy on their house, as part

Winter ConcertsThe Strings Concert on Tuesday, December 16, 2008 was fabulous! Many well-known Christmas songs were played by Lakeview's well-trained 6th, 7th, and 8th grade strings students. The audience was full of students, parents, and teachers enjoying the performance. The Band and Chorus Concert on Thursday, December 18 packed the Lakeview cafeteria with standing room only. Read Around the Christmas TreeOn December 9 and 10, students from 4-K programs from Alexander, Cherrydale, and Duncan Chapel Elementary came to Lakeview to hear 8th graders read stories to them around Christmas trees decorated in a certain theme. The eighth-grade's service learning project this year is "Read Around the Christmas Tree" and was planned in coordination with the media center. They also had milk and cookies and got to tell Santa what they wanted for Christmas. Photos... The New Student Government OfficersCongratulations to the new officers! They are as follows: Sandy Lesley, Secretary; Octavio Cruz, Treasurer; and Bobbi Jo Culbertson, Vice-President. Hat Day to Raise Funds/Bring Your Parent to Lab DayOn Friday, November 21 the eighth grade sponsored a Hat Day to raise funds for their upcoming service learning project in December. They are working together with the Media Center to do "Read Around the Christmas Tree" with four year olds from some of our feeder schools. The eighth grade is preparing to decorate, read and delight four year olds who just might one day say, "I remember I came here to Lakeview one wonderful day and heard people say Merry Christmas. We hope you'll be a student here one day!" Thank you Ms. Manley, all of eighth grade, and all of the students who participated in Hat Day for helping us in such a wonderful way!

She asked them questions about why they were wanting to be in student government. Some of the interviews were aired during the news later that night. Our students had excellent interviews! Photos... Student Government Association SpeechesAll grade levels went to the cafeteria on November 5 to hear the speeches of the candidates running for offices in the SGA. Tyrin Williams, the President of SGA, introduced all the candidates before they spoke. The candidates are as follows: Sandy Lesley for Secretary, Octavio Cruz for Treasurer, Jezarela Vallecillo for Treasurer, Kayla McCoy for Vice-President, and Bobbi Jo Culbertson for Vice-President. National Junior Honor Society InductionThe NJHS Induction was on Wednesday, October 15 in the media center. Photos... Hispanic CelebrationHispanic Awareness Week was the week of October 6-10 with the last day ending in a huge celebration in the gym. The Hispanic students of Lakeview participated in the Parade of Flags, there were magnificent Hispanic dancers, and the Lakeview Chorus sang. Photos... Student-Led Conferences, Related Arts Celebration, and PTA MeetingLakeview's Related Arts Celebration and PTA meeting with Student-Led Conferences was Thursday, October 2 with heavy hors d’oeuvres served from 5:45-6:15 PM. If you could not come to a Student-Led Conference on October 2, then you have two more opportunities on October 9 or Oct. 11.
