On Friday, December 15,
2006, our kindergarten students and the cafeteria ladies got together for
our first “Reading with Granny” experience! What a treat!
Each Granny was assigned a small group of kids to read with. The children
took books that they had made in class as well as one easy reader book that
they wanted to read. When we got to the cafeteria, the Grannies came and
greeted their kids and they broke off to different areas of the room. For
15 minutes the Grannies listened to each child as they read their books to
the rest of the group. After the books had all been read in each group,
they spent so time getting to know each other. After a hug bye from each
Granny, we returned to the class where are children made thank you notes for
their specific Granny. We also completed a consens-o-gram for our class and
also for the lunchroom ladies. Each person had a chance to vote on whether
they enjoyed the first “Reading with Granny” experience and were invited to
make comments. Every person, big and small, voted in favor of reading with
each other again!
