Kerns Elementary
Student Spotlight 2010-2011
Thomas E. Kerns hosted their very first “Pay It Forward”
Extravaganza featuring Brian E. Taylor and several other prominent African
American males from South Carolina. Traveling from Charleston, Georgia, and even
Washington D.C., these vibrant, well-dressed men entered Kerns Elementary with a
vast amount of knowledge that they poured into the minds of our students. The
“Pay It Forward” slogan initiated from the idea incorporated of Black History
month with leaders in the building combining Black History with a need at having
positive African American male role models for our 60% African American male
population. The students were intrigued with wealth of information they gained
from the visitors. They learned how to “Pay It Forward” in their school and
community.
