FINANCIAL AID INFORMATION
Financial Aid is money that is given, paid, or lent to help students pay for their education. Financial Aid can often make it possible for you to attend colleges that you and your parents might otherwise think are too expensive. Four Categories of Financial Aid Grants - Money that is given to you, usually because of financial need Scholarships – Money that is awarded because of exceptional academic achievement, and outstanding talent or skill, and/or financial need College Work-Study – Money you earn by working at a campus job Loans – Money borrowed that must be repaid
Generally, all financial aid is awarded in the form of a financial package. Your package- consisting of grants, scholarships, loans, and/or work-study is pulled together by the college’s Financial Aid Office. Financial Aid Packages vary from college to college. To Begin the Financial Aid Process: Step 1: Complete the FAFSA Form after January 1, of the year you plan to enroll in college. This form is required for grants, college work-study, loans, and many scholarships. The FAFSA Form can be completed online at www.fafsa.ed.gov or obtained from the school’s Guidance Office. Step 2: Complete applications for any scholarships in which you may qualify or meet specific criteria. Pay especially careful to deadline. Many scholarships require a written essay, letters of recommendations, and transcripts/test scores. Step 3: Meet with school counselor to see if you are eligible for any state scholarships. Most state scholarships are dependent upon GPA, class rank, SAT/ACT scores. There is no application for the Life Scholarship, SC Hope Scholarship or Lottery Tuition Assistance Program. These scholarships are awarded by the college you Plan to attend after graduation from high school. All state scholarships must be Used for in-state public or private colleges. Step 4: Check in weekly in the Guidance Office for current and upcoming Scholarship Information. Step 5: Check with parents place of employment, community agencies, and private organizations on scholarship opportunities. Step 6: Use the College Planning Guide on the guidance webpage.
