SPEECH PATHOLOGIST

The Speech-Language Program at J.L. Mann provides identification and treatment of speech-language disorders for students enrolled at the school. Speech therapy involves deficits in the areas of language, articulation, voice and fluency as it impacts the academic curriculum. Students enrolled in special needs classes, such as orthopedically impaired, mentally impaired and hearing impaired, often receive speech-language therapy. In addition, the Speech-Language Pathologist consults with students, teachers and parents concerning communication needs.

TRAINABLE MENTALLY DISABLED

The TMD students use a functional curriculum that encompasses anything that will help the students become as independent as they possibly can both at home and in the community. Some examples include money management, time skills, survival reading, homemaking skills, and basic work skills.

OCCUPATIONAL DIPLOMA /OCCUPATIONAL DIPLOMA CERTIFICATE

The curriculum is designed to be an option for youth with disabilities incorporating rigorous academics and vocational standards. The curriculum is correlated with the requirement stated in the Individuals With Disabilities Education Act Public Law 105-17. Student participation in this program is made by an Individual Education Plan Committee.

The six components in the program are:

Employment English

Job Skills Math

Life Skills Science

Career Preparation

Career Rotation

Job Shadowing/Competitive Employment

RESOURCE

Instructional goals for resource classes include assisting students with earning Carnegie units needed for graduation by giving tests, monitoring homework, and assisting with projects. Remediation of deficit areas, monitoring of behavior intervention plans, addressing transitions and self-advocacy goals, and preparation for PACT/BSAP are also goals. Due to the diversity of students’ abilities and needs, a variety of instructional strategies such as whole class instruction, small group instruction, individual instruction and peer tutoring are implemented.
