J. L. Mann Academy is only one of 265 schools in the United States that have a High School Army JROTC Program. Army JROTC is a national program authorized by laws enacted by Congress and conducted by the Department of the Army in cooperation with Greenville County School District. The mission of the program is "To Motivate Young People to be Better Citizens." The purpose is to instill in student the values of citizenship, service to the community and to the United States, personal responsibility and a sense of accomplishment. The cadets develop appreciation of the ethical values and principle that underlie good citizenship which include integrity, responsibility, and respect for constituted authority.

Leadership potential is abundant while being a cadet. Cadets are placed in leadership positions as members of the staff that help to run the program. Cadets are challenged to think logically and to communicate effectively both orally and in writing. The importance of physical fitness is also stressed because of its importance in maintaining good health.

The program is designed for physically fit citizens and nationals of the United States attending J. L. Mann Academy. It provides meaningful leadership instruction of benefit to the student and of value to the Nation. The cadets can participate in a variety of extra curricular activities with JROTC including the Raider Team, the Rifle Team, the Drill Team, and the Color Guard. The program is very active at the school and posts the National Colors at sporting events.
