We are proud of our World Language Department at J. L. Mann! This year we offer levels from I to IV Honors in Latin, Spanish and French. We also offer A.P. French Language and A.P. Spanish Language.
Students need only ONE credit of a World Language to graduate from high school (unless student is enrolled at Golden Strip). Many colleges only require TWO World Language credits, like USC, but some require THREE credits, like Clemson.
We encourage heritage speakers to study another language other than their own. What better way to become trilingual? Heritage speakers who wish to study their own language are encouraged to speak to Department Chair, Nancy Larrain, in the spring during registration for placement purposes.
Trips abroad to France and Spain are offered on a yearly basis through the World Language and History Departments.
World Language Department Goals
1. Students will be equally prepared for the next level of language through common planning efforts.
2. Technology will be used in at least 1-2 cultural projects during the year in each language level.
3. There will be a focus on increasing Reading Comprehension in each level. We believe that better readers become better at listening, speaking, writing and reading!
4. The L2 (ie, Spanish, French) will be used as the language of communication by the teacher and students as much as possible in all levels.
