9/3/10
Dear Parents,
I wanted to update you on the impact the state budget deficit has had on JL Mann High School for the 2010-11 school year. The state legislature this summer gave the Greenville County School Board the ability to keep the $275 every teacher received for supplies if the money was to be used to save teaching jobs. The district opted to keep this money and also raised the mileage rate 2 mills, which gave the district the flexibility to set the student to teacher ratio at 23 to 1. As a result JL Mann High School lost 4.2 teaching positions instead of 7 teaching positions. We also were cut $100,393 in supply and site based management money. The guidance office work year was cut by 35 days. I’m sure that there were many of you who were frustrated this summer by having to wait to receive transcripts or other guidance services as a result of the guidance office not being open. Below is an up to date listing of the specific cuts made in order to balance our budget.
Eliminated teaching positions:
.5 French
French is not a core class and had low enrollment.
.5 Science
The Science department had one additional teacher allocation when compared to the other core departments.
.5 Band
Band had very low enrollment numbers for this school year.
1.0 Drivers Ed
Drivers Ed has full classes but serves only fifteen students per class.
.5 ESOL
We will share our ESOL teacher this year with Greenville High School.
.5 Career Development Facilitator
The counselors in the guidance department will have to pick up the responsibilities of the Career Development Facilitator. It is mandated by the legislature that someone perform the responsibilities of the CDF. The CDF is the primary person responsible for Individual Graduation Plans (IGP).
.2 German
German had very low student enrollment numbers for this school year.
.5 Curriculum Resource Teacher
Mrs. Peak will serve as our .5 Science teacher and .5 CRT
Last year we used .2 of a teaching position to pay a faculty member to teach an extra math class. The teacher has agreed to do the same for this year with no additional pay.
$48,225 was cut from our FY11 Supply Allocation. This money was used to pay for printing, supplies and other resources that were needed in the classroom. $52,168 was cut from our Site Based Management Contingency Funds. This money was used to supplement our supply allocation. Site Based Management money combined with the cut in our supply allocation was a total cut of $100,393 in addition to the 4.2 faculty positions lost.
The following courses were eliminated for the 2010-11 school year:
Journalism Low student enrollment.
Freshman Success Low student enrollment.
German 1-3 Low student enrollment.
AP French Kept French 4 instead.
AP Chemistry Kept AP Biology instead.
AP Spanish Kept Spanish 4 instead. AP Spanish is, however, offered as an independent study.
Leadership Low student enrollment and student council will meet before school.
AP Computer Science Another business class was kept that would serve more students.
Please know that the faculty, staff and I are committed to helping your child obtain a quality education, regardless of the budget cuts previously mentioned. The motto for our school for the past year has been and continues to be “Making a Difference!” It is my intention that we continue to make a positive difference in each student in our school. While the challenges will be difficult, I can assure you we will continue to do everything we can to help your child reach their full potential.
Sincerely,
Charles S. Mayfield
Principal
