2001-2002 Hillcrest Middle School Report to the Community |
Introduction
|
The
Administration, Staff, and School Improvement Council of Hillcrest Middle
School present this annual report to the parents and others in the
community interested in the school. This report reviews the programs, test
scores, educational improvement objectives, accomplishments, and other
important information about the school. Please feel free to contact Keith

Current Status:Hillcrest Middle school has
1130 students in grades six, seven, and eight. Seventy-six percent of our
students are Caucasian and twenty-four percent are minorities which
include African-American, Asian, and Hispanic. There are 63 professional
personnel and 39 support personnel for a total of 102 staff members at
Hillcrest Middle School. The school is accredited by the Southern
Association of Colleges and Schools and by the South Carolina State
Department of Education. Every professional is certified. Hillcrest Middle
School offers the students of its community a broad program of study
designed to meet the needs of all students. The curriculum is demanding
but flexible enough to allow for individual needs and differences. The
extracurricular program offers students a wide variety of activities
related to the curriculum. The PTA continues to be supportive, serving
both the school and community.
Accomplishments:
An increase from 2001-2002 the number of students taking high school
credit courses.
- 187 students in 2001-2002 taking high school credit courses
- 233 students in 2002-2003 taking high school credit courses
Eighty percent of eighth graders achieving a PACT score above standards
in Math and Language Arts.
Web-design classes offered to seventh and eighth graders at Hillcrest
Middle School.
An increase in communication between teachers and parents due to the
interactive ability through teacher created websites.
A grade of GOOD for overall performance on the South Carolina Annual
School Report Card.
An increase of Duke Tip SAT Scholars.
- 58 scholars during 2001-2002
- 79 scholars during 2002-2003
An increase of students who qualified to take the PSAT.

An increase in SC Junior Scholars program.
-60 students qualified during 2001-2002

Educational Improvement Objectives:
Implement the results gathered from the School Portfolio process to
improve overall student achievement.
Coordinate efforts among school organizations, the community, area
businesses and the local school board to build a collaborative
supportive learning environment in order to enhance the instructional
process at Hillcrest Middle School.
Continue to provide a school climate that fosters not only the
academic process, but also promotes the growth of students in all areas
of development.
Area of Concern:
In academics, we are working diligently to decrease the number of
students who are scoring Below Basic on the PACT test and to increase the
number of students who are scoring at the Advanced and Proficient levels.

2002, 84.3% of 6th graders were above standards in English/Language Arts.
In 2001, 87.1 % of 7th graders were above standards in English/Language
Arts. In 2002, 87.8% of 7th graders were above standards in
English/Language Arts.
In 2001, 79.3% of 8th graders were above standards in English/Language
Arts. In 2002, 84.0% of 8th graders were above standards in
English/Language Arts.
