Media Center FAQs

When is the Media Center open?

The media center is open on school days, Monday - Thursday from 7:45 - 4:00.  On Fridays the media center closes at 3:45.  We are closed on Wednesdays when faculty meetings are held.

When do I need a pass?

Every student must have a pass between 8:30 and 3:30.  Passes are to be stamped by the time clock, placed in the basket, and students are to sign in on the clipboard.  When leaving the media center, passes need to be stamped again and taken with the student.  Passes can be given by teachers, administrators, and the school office.  Passes from substitutes are not accepted.

How do I find my next book, and how do I know if it is available?

Our card catalogue is online.  It is called OPAC (Online Public Access Catalogue) or Web Catalog.  You can access OPAC from any computer even at home.  There is a link to the OPAC from this site.  OPAC tells what a book is about, where it is located, and if it is available.  If the system says there are 0 of 1 available, that means we own a copy, but it is currently checked out.  If you need help finding something to read, the staff is always available to make suggestions.

What do the labels on the books mean?

F= Fiction; B=Biography; SC=Story Collection; FL=Foreign Language; PLA=Playaway (audiobook); R=Reference; if there is just a number then the book is nonfiction.

How long can I keep a book, and what are the fines?

Fiction, biography, story collection, foreign language, and nonfiction can be checked out for two weeks at a time.  Overdue books are charged $0.10 a day excluding weekends and holidays.  Reference material is only available for overnight checkouts.  They can be checked out at 3:00, and they must be returned by 8:30 the next morning.  After this time, they will be considered overdue and are fined $0.10 an hour during school hours.  Playaways can be checked out for two weeks, and their overdue fine is $0.50 a day.  Books can be renewed one time, which allows the student one month to read the book.  You do not have to have the book to have it renewed.  If you think you have lost your book, please come talk with us.  We will try to work with you.

Can I use my cell phone in the media center?

Cell phones may not be used in the media center at anytime, including before and after school.  Students are reading and working in the media center, and the ringers and talking are a distraction.

Can I have my drink in the media center?

Food and drink is not allowed in the media center.  Your drink can be left at the circulation desk to be retrieved when you leave.
