What is the purpose of the Freshman Academy?

The Freshman Academy has been set up to help incoming eighth graders to get acclimated to the High School setting. The core courses of English, Math, Science, and Social Studies are all taught in close proximity in the back of the building. The Freshman Academy is located in the back 100 and 200 hallways. Only Freshmen are allowed in the Academy so our teachers get familiar with the students rather quickly. They become mentors, trusted faces, and helping hands with goals to make the transition from eighth grade to ninth go more smoothly. We hope that with our closer attention to detail we can help our student's achieve a higher level of success.

Goals of the Freshman Academy

  • Increase the number of students who successfully complete 9th grade
  • Increase the attendance rate
  • Decrease the number of referrals for discipline
  • Raise student achievement levels
  • Increase the number of students who participate in extracurricular activities
  • Promote student awareness of post-secondary education and/or vocational needs in planning for the high school career

Strategies for Success:

  • Core curriculum for 9th graders only
  • Cooperative work groups
  • Innovative teaching
  • Integration of technology
  • Focus on reading and writing across the curriculum
  • Teacher teams
  • Enhanced communication between school and home
  • Enhanced guidance support
  • Rigorous curriculum for all students
  • Focus on critical thinking skills
  • Early intervention
