SAT/ACT Testing Information

SAT or ACT four-year colleges/universities in SC accept both
SAT and /or ACT scores. Some do not require the tests for
admission.
SAT focuses on the following: verbal and math reasoning skill,
critical reading, vocabulary, and math problem-solving skills in
algebra, geometry, and arithmetic. For more practice, you may

The ACT focuses on testing achievement in English, mathematics,

The ASSET is the test given by Greenville Tech. Additional
testing may also be required.

SAT Preparation Courses 2008-2009
The SAT Preparation Course offered at Greenville Technical
College will consist of six sessions, three of which focus on
strategies to improve the verbal skills of reading comprehension and
to increase vocabulary. The other three classes focus on math
strategies to give students a better understanding of math problems
on the SAT. Incorporated into all of the classes is information on
general strategies to overcome test taking fears and tactics for
taking standardized tests.
Class usually meets two evenings per week Tues and Thurs for
three weeks from 7-9 P.M. Course fee of $139 does not include test

How Do the Tests Compare?
SAT: What is the test Structure? Ten-section exam: three
Critical Reading, three Math, three Writing, and one Experimental.
The Experimental section is masked to look like a regular section.
What is the test content? Math: up to basic geometry and Algebra II,
Reading: sentence completions, short and long critical reading
passages, reading comprehension. Writing: an essay, and questions
testing grammar, usage, and word choice. There is a penalty for
wrong answers. How is the test scored? 200-800 per section, added
together for a combined score. 2400 is the highest possible combined
score. Are all scores sent to schools? Yes. If a student
requests a score report to be sent to specific colleges, the report
will include the scores the student received on every SAT taken.
Best time to register? At least six weeks before the test date
ACT: Structure: Five-section exam: English, Math, Reading,
Science Reasoning, and Writing. The experimental section is added
to tests on certain dates only and is clearly experimental.
Content: Math: up to trigonometry, Science : charts,
experiments, Reading: four passages, one each of Prose Fiction,
Social Science, Humanities, and Natural Science, English: stresses
grammar, Writing: persuasive essay. There is no penalty for wrong
answers. How is the test scored? 1-36 for each subject, averaged
for a composite score. 36 is the highest possible composite score.
Are all scores sent to schools? No. There is a “Score Choice
option. Students can choose which schools receive their scores and
which scores the schools see. Best time to register? At least four
weeks before the test date
