Health Science Technology 1A & 1B is
a separate and distinct two-semester study and is the prerequisite
for Health Science Technology II. Designed to stand alone,
Health Science Technology I is separate from Health Science
Technology II for the purpose
of standardization and differentiation. Mobile students enrolled in
Health Science Technology I and II should find it easier to transfer
between career centers within the state. This course introduces the
student to themes and components common to a variety of allied
health careers. There is an emphasis on lifelong learning and the
interdisciplinary team approach, with special attention given to
ethical practice, communication skills, infection control, anatomy
and physiology, computer literacy and work-based learning. The
curriculum introduces the student to hygiene and grooming, medical
terminology, first aid/CPR, body structure, nutrition, and tasks
unique to most health care careers. Health Science Technology I and II are
designed to enhance articulation between high school courses and
post secondary allied health programs. Students will also be
prepared for curriculum taught at the community college/technical
college level (e.g., medical terminology, Health Science I) upon
successful completion of Health Science Technology I and Health
Science Technology
II. Advanced standing practices vary among institutions and
geographic regions of the state. Consultation with high school
guidance counselors and college admissions offices is advised.
Completion of Health Science Technology I and Health Science
Technology II also
will prepare the student for immediate employment in a health care
assistance role of clerical role.
