The
6th grade took a fieldtrip
to Bryson City, NC to ride the Great Smoky
Mountain Railroad. The excursion took us to the
Nantahala Outdoor Center. This magnificent trip
offered highlights like the Horseshoe Curve,
Fontana Lake Trestle, Tennessee River, and the
Natahala River Gorge. Students have been
reading various novels about life in the
Appalachian Mountains, science classes studied
plants and their habitats, math worked on
various calculations for the trip and social
studies students plotted our route using
latitude and longitude.
Greer
Middle School students recently participated in
"One for Books" during the Scholastic
Book Fair. The dollars collected went to help
restock the media center in Nichols Elementary
School in Biloxi,
Mississippi, which was destroyed by Katrina.
Students and faculty contributed $600 which will
be matched by Scholastic. Some sixth grade
students from Mrs. Kay Abbott's Language Arts
class are pictured here with the "One for Books"
contribution forms filled out by donors and
pictures of Nichols Elementary.
Mrs.
Wade 6th grade math c lass
created a
Sierpinski's Triangle out of soda cans as a math
project.
Her second period class created a famous fractal
out of soda cans. Groups created their own
fractals and combined them to create one large
Sierpinski's triangle. Waclaw Sierpinski, given
credit for discovering this fractal, was a
Polish mathematician who died in 1969.
