Greer High School
Symbols and Alma Mater
SCHOOL SEAL
The school seal, designed by the faculty and students, was adopted by Greer High in 1935 to serve as a symbol for class rings. The seal contains a scroll with the school motto 'Parantes pro Civilate', (Preparing for Citizenship), and the coat-of-arms for the school. Within the coat-of- arms is a palmetto tree, an emblem of the state; a yellow-jacket, the emblem of the school- and a peach and a branch, symbolizing the community. Mountain peaks serve as the crest.

Alma Mater
The alma mater has
been around for over seventy years. It dates back to 1927, when Anne
Frierson, the music, chorus, and Glee Club director, held a contest within
the school to write words for an alma mater since Greer High did not
yet have one. The competition was open to all students, and,
encouraged by Mrs. Frierson, freshman Elizabeth Jones decided to enter.
After several attempts, she had two verses and a chorus written to a
well-known tune used by many high schools and colleges. Later on, all the
entries were judged, and it was announced that the best songs would be
played, sung and voted on by the student body. Elizabeth's alma
mater was chosen, and today, it is still used exactly as she wrote it so
long ago.
In the state of Carolina,
Near the mountains blue,
Stately stands a noble structure
With a spirit true.CHORUS:
Lift your voices
Shout your praises
Over hill and dale.
Here's to thee, our Alma Mater.
Hail thee, Greer High, Hail! Now and when we have departed
From her halls afar,
May her truths and lofty ideals
Be our guiding star.
