Take a Walk Through Time with Indiana Jones

Dr. David West ReynoldsGreenville, SC -  The life and times of everyone’s favorite archaeologist, Indiana Jones, will come alive on Saturday, May 10 at Roper Mountain Science Center from 9:00 A.M. to 2:30 P.M.    Visitors can explore some of the real history surrounding the character of  Indiana Jones’ and his escapades from handling snakes and spiders, to sifting for fossils, and helping to solve the mystery of a damaged human skull.  The renowned Dr. David West Reynolds will be presenting the entertaining and informative program, “The Archaeology of Indiana Jones” in the Hipp auditorium at 10:30am and 12:30pm.  Dr. Reynolds, an archaeologist who has worked for Lucasfilm and has written a number of New York Times bestsellers, will dissect the reality and myth of the Indiana Jones movies. Event sponsors are GE Energy, The Greenville News and the Humanities Council of South Carolina.

While Indiana Jones’ adventures led him through both World Wars and around the world on archaeological digs, visitors can participate in similar interactive experiences by visiting Roper Mountain Science Center on May 10.  Explore an array of artifacts, ephemera, and uniforms from the World Wars.  Trek through the Rainforest as you investigate the “Mystery of the Crystal Skull.”  Meet members of the South Carolina Archaeological Society, Foothills Chapter, who will demonstrate the methods of archaeology as well as the art of flint knapping. 

Also featured on May 10 will be a number of Indy-inspired displays created by Greenville County Schools students covering an array of topics that include Archaeology, Ancient Greece, Ancient China, Ancient Egypt, Teddy Roosevelt and the Conservation Movement, the Harlem Renaissance, the Suffrage Movement, the World Wars, World Mythology, and Innovations in Transportation. Visitors will also be able to discover more about any subject area that piques their interest through a book fair provided by Barnes & Noble.  Furthermore, throughout the day, the Center will premiere multiple documentaries by award winning journalist and filmmaker David Schneider of JAK Films, Inc. /Lucasfilm Ltd.  There will also be food and concessions available courtesy of Chick-fil-A. The Humanities Council of SC is a state program of the National Endowment for the Humanities.

Roper Mountain Science Center is open to the public on the second Saturday of each month.  General admission is: $4 for senior citizens 60 and over; $4 for children 6-12; and $5 for ages 13-59.  There is no admission charge for children 5 and under or for members of the RMSC Association.

Roper Mountain Science Center is owned and operated by Greenville County Schools as an educational resource for teachers, students, and families.
