If the educators are the "front line" of education, then "Student Performance" personnel are the backup troops. Teaching and learning strategies, special education services, closing the achievement gap, technology and career support, business education partnerships, and all of the federal programs rally around the mission to make The School District of Greenville County the best in the Southeast.
Teaching and Learning
The Teaching and Learning Department is responsible for assessing, developing, and evaluating curriculum; coordinating special programs; and providing for the continuous improvement of instruction. Our Team provides leadership in Curriculum and Instruction. We support administrators, teachers, and other instructional personnel as they engage all students in quality learning experiences leading to higher student achievement.
Special Education Services
Special Education Services of The School District of Greenville County provides a free appropriate public education to all children with disabilities in accordance with the Individuals with Disabilities Act. Special education students are served by a faculty and staff of over 800 teachers, therapists and other specialists who are trained to provide state-of-the-art instruction and assistance designed to meet individual needs of children identified as having disabilities.
Business Education Partnership
The Business Education Partnership Program seeks to expand and to enrich learning opportunities for children, to create a climate of involvement and interaction between businesses and education and to foster a people-to-people understanding between schools and businesses in preparing for the economic future of the community. Business people have a chance to work with the students, teachers, and administrators on providing a realistic picture of the business world, enhancing the curriculum, and working on projects needed by the schools.
Career Technology Education
Career Technology Education provides high school students an opportunity to attain career and technology competencies for the workplace, related academic instruction, and a foundation for career development through higher education. These programs provide students with educational experiences to establish career goals and to develop competencies and attitudes necessary for success in the occupation of their choice. Career technology education courses are offered through the District's career centers, high schools, and middle schools.
Closing the Gap
With our Closing the Gap program Greenville County public schools are working to improve the academic achievement of all students. One major challenge is the achievement gap between groups of students from families with varying income levels and/or from different ethnic groups. This is especially important as the number of minority students and students from low-income families continues to increase. Targeted efforts are needed to improve the achievement of lower-performing students, while continuing to raise the academic performance of all students.
Title I
Title I is a federally funded program designed to provide educational opportunities for disadvantaged students. Title I funds identified schools the staff to provide accelerated and enriched academic programs to students while also stressing parental involvement in the total school program.
NCLB (No Child Left Behind) changes the federal government's role in kindergarten through grade 12 education by asking America's schools to describe their success in terms of what each student accomplishes. The act contains the President's four basic education reform principles: stronger accountability for results, increased flexibility and local control, expanded options for parents, and an emphasis on teaching methods that have been proven to work.
According to the No Child Left Behind Act of 2001 (NCLB), eligible students attending Title I schools that have not made adequate yearly progress for three consecutive years must be offered the opportunity to receive supplemental educational services. Supplemental Educational Services (SES) are services such as tutoring, remediation, and other educational intervention that are available for students who qualify for free or reduced lunch.
Parents have an opportunity to sign up for free academic tutoring if your child is enrolled in one of the Title I schools listed below. A student must meet the lunch eligibility requirement. If you are interested, you can call the school and talk with the Title I facilitators at the numbers listed HERE.
Research & Testing
The Department of Research, Evaluation, Accountability, & Testing supports and assists schools and district representatives in reaching goals by designing and implementing planned programs of research, testing, evaluation, and accountability structures related to the ongoing development of instructional and other student-related programs. In addition, we provide constituents with data and concomitant interpretations with the intent to better inform data users in making data-driven decisions.
