What is it?
- A worldwide initiative to provide teachers
with the skills to effectively integrate computer technology into
existing curriculum to improve student learning.
- Over three years, Intel will invest $100 million in cash, equipment, curriculum development and program management to train 1 million classroom teachers in over 29 countries around the world, 100,000 of which will be in the US.
Curriculum Goals
- Focusing on the ways students and teachers use technology to enhance learning through research, communication, and productivity strategies and tools.
- Emphasizing hands-on learning and the creation of curricular units and evaluation tools, which address state and national academic and technology standards.
- Promoting effective use of technology in the classroom.
- Promoting engaging opportunities for students through access to technology.
- Encouraging teachers to work in teams, problem-solve and participate in peer review of their units.
Greenville County Schools Implementation
- Greenville County Schools has an aggressive plan to train 900 teachers a year over the next four years beginning in Fall 2002.
- The Intel Teach to the Future program will be used to assist teachers in meeting the Teacher Technology Proficiency Proviso for the state of South Carolina.
Teacher Technology Proficiency Proviso
Proviso Statement
To ensure the effective and efficient use of the funding provided by the General Assembly in Part 1A, Section 1 X.C. for school technology in the classroom and internet access, the State Department of Education shall approve teacher technology competency standards required by local school districts as part of the Teacher Professional Development Plan. Approval of the teacher technology standards by the Department shall be a prerequisite for expenditure of district technology funds. Teachers must demonstrate proficiency in these standards and be validated by the school district.
Explanations of Requirement
- This is a phase-in proviso (see Phase Cycle Chart)
- Teachers must demonstrate technology proficiency during their own next certification validity period.
- School districts will submit an assurance form to the Office of Technology validating the fact that the teacher is proficient in technology prior to the conclusion of his/her validity period.
- Teacher technology competency standards (which should be included in and/or tied to district technology plans) must be approved by the Office of Technology as a prerequisite to expenditure of district technology funds. Guidelines will be provided including sample standards/assessment tools, and verification of approval of technology plans and standards via the Department of Education Web site:
- The Department of Education endorses and advocates that school districts adopt and follow the standards developed by the International Society for Technology in Education (ISTE)
