Our Technology Plan
Greenville County Schools Technology Plan
Our Vision
The School District of Greenville County envisions a learning community where:
- Students are engaged in a challenging curriculum that uses technology as a tool to increase focus on inquiry-based, hands-on learning. Technology supports students in developing the life-long learning skills necessary to have a positive impact on society. Technology will support this development by refining students' creative thinking skills, enabling effective communication, and fostering creativity.
- Teachers use technology to engage students in achieving the high academic state curriculum standards and to increase students' skills in critical and creative thinking: problem solving, collaborating, and applying knowledge in new and real-world situations. Teachers acquire ongoing and continuous professional development in the use and integration of technology to effectively help students attain these high standards.
- Administrative functions, including those performed by instructional staff, are fully automated, thereby allowing more of the school system's energy and resources to be focused on student education.
- The schools become an environment where all students and staff have ready access to a full range of current technology, software tools, and applications. The schools have knowledgeable staff and external resources (such as parents, community members, business, higher education, and network resources) to further the curriculum goals.
What Do We Do?
ETS is responsible for all facets of District technology from WAN and LAN and Internet connectivity to telephone service; from Educational Television (ETV) to assisting classroom teachers with technology; from the Greenville School Technology & Administrative Resources (GSTAR) administrative system for procurement and payroll and reports to Schools Administrative Student Information (SASIxp) software; from designing technology solutions for schools to repairing individual computers.

E-Rate
E - Rate is a program of the Schools and Libraries Division (SLD) of the Universal Service Administrative Company to provide affordable access to telecommunications services for all eligible schools and libraries in the United States. Funded at up to $2.25 billion annually, the Program provides discounts on
- Telecommunications services
- Internet access
- Internal connections
Since SCDOE provides Internet access for school districts, SDGC is eligible to file for telecommunications services and internal connections only. Discount percentage is determined for each school and for the District using percentage of Free and Reduced Lunch and various demographic factors. To qualify for E - Rate discounts, each school district must have a specific Technology Plan. Once all criteria are met, we as a District submit applications for individual schools, as well as District-Wide for discounted phone service.
E - Rate has strict timelines and guidelines to follow. Even though the process can be very involved, it definitely has it's rewards. These discounts are usually not in the form of a check. The majority of savings are reflected in discounts taken off the total invoice from the vendor. These discounts help reduce the amount we spend on eligible projects, thus freeing up funding to support other technology requirements.
Additional information on E-Rate in the School District of Greenville County is available from the ETS Special Projects Office. Phone: 355-3114; e-mail: sjparker@greenville.k12.sc.us |

| SASIxp is a revolutionary student information system which provides administrators and teachers with a wide array of flexible, yet easy-to-use tools for monitoring and tracking individual student information and progress. |
| SASI has everything you could want and more than you would expect. SASIxp is a revolutionary software system that manages extensive student information at both the school and district level with a pleasing graphical environment that organizes screens to look like index cards. |
SASIxp offers instant access to all the information you need including student demographics, attendance, discipline, grades, schedules, health, immunization, emergency, and parent/guardian. Because of a variety of navigational methods, individual users have the flexibility to view information in a way that's easy for them. Every authorized staff member is assigned a unique password and ID number that determines what data they can access, ensuring security of the entire system. |
Working with SASIxp not only provides instant, detailed student information, but saves all personnel some valuable time. Whenever data is input into one SASIxp module, it is automatically shared with other modules that may require the same information. Plus, SASIxp has comprehensive querying and reporting capabilities. |
SASI in Greenville Schools
In May 1999, the South Carolina State Department of Education awarded NCS (National Computer Systems) a contract to provide and implement SASI. SASI will replace Osiris (our current software). SASI allows the user to access multiple pieces of information on a single student with just a few mouse clicks (graphical user interface). Any information entered into one module is automatically shared with the other modules that require the same information. It also provides "real-time" information when a student transfers from one school to another within the district, which eliminates duplication of information between schools.
