Who teaches A.R.M.E.S.?
This after-school program provides arts education taught by professional artists in art, dance, drama and strings. All A.R.M.E.S. classes are offered at no cost to the student. (However, Strings students will be asked to provide their own instruments) The ARMES program is funded by the South Carolina Educational Improvement Act (EIA) and currently serves approximately 400 students in Greenville County.
> Allow young students to develop as artists
> Create a stimulating learning environment in which students experience both intellectual and social
> Develop behaviors useful in self-directed learning
> Heighten enthusiasm for learning
> Increase knowledge and use of creative problem-solving and critical-thinking skills
> Foster appreciation for personal abilities
> Encourage the development of aesthetic values
Will A.R.M.E.S. interfere with regular school work?
Classes are taught at a pace and level of complexity appropriate for artistically gifted children with similar abilities and interests. Classes contribute to the development of these children in significant ways, which may include field trips, creative writing, and limited homework. Participation in the ARMES program does not excuse students from their regular school assignments and grade maintenance.
How can a student join this program?
Any interested student must first obtain a nomination form to be completed by a teacher, parent, or self. The student will then be scheduled for an audition in the spring. Nomination forms can be completed online. Nomination process begins in mid-school year for the upcoming year.
Where and when are the classes?
All ARMES classes are held after regular school hours. Students attend classes twice a week for a total of three hours of instruction per week. Drama classes are held at The Sterling School. Visual Arts, Dance and Strings classes are held at the Fine Arts Center.
What is the cost and is transportation provided?
The ARMES program is provided tuition-free; however, funding guidelines do not provide for transportation. It is the family's responsibility to get the student to and from class. We do encourage carpooling and will assist with carpool arrangements if possible.
