The Carpentry program is designed to prepare students to perform entry-level carpentry tasks under the supervision of an experienced carpenter.  Carpentry students receive instruction in framing, construction material, blueprint reading, and safety.   Also included is instruction in site preparation, using power and hand tools, and applied mathematics. Students may receive NCCER CORE Certification.

Fee $365. The Cosmetology program is designed to prepare students to qualify for licensing examinations.  Cosmetology students receive training in the art and science of the care and beautification of hair, skin, and nails.  The course includes scalp treatments, hair shaping, hair styling, setting, waving, hair coloring, and shampoos and rinses.  Care of skin and nails includes manicuring and pedicuring, massage, facials, makeup application, and hair removal.  Instruction in chemistry, bacteriology, and anatomy and physiology of the face, head, arms, and hands is incorporated by means of theory and practical application on both mannequins and live models.  Also included in the course of study is salon planning and management.

This course will be taught on the Greenville Technical College Northwest Campus and may be a dual credit class.

Culinary Arts serves as the introduction to the study of the food service industry.  Students who enjoy working with food and are willing to study and practice the techniques of cooking will have greater success at employment upon completion.  All aspects of the industry and potential careers, equipment use and upkeep, food preparation and service, food storage, ordering, and work simplification are covered in this program  Students will receive practical and theoretical experiences so that competence in each area will be obtained.

Using the investigative project approach, students explore careers with young children.  Students learn how to plan and guide a variety of children’s activities, such as reading, language, music, art, science, math, and games.  Characteristics of quality early childhood programs and professional teachers are studied.  Family issues that influence children’s growth and development are explored.  Students develop important work skills for problem solving, goal setting, teamwork, organizing, and creative thinking.  Reading, writing and computer skills are components of class work.  Community CPR, First Aid, and Blood borne Pathogens classes and ServSafe certification are included. Students will also work with elementary teacher in clinical internships.

Gerontology (Certified Nursing Assistant)

This course combines classroom instruction and work-based experience to prepare students for post-secondary education and / or immediate employment as a certified nursing assistant.  Students complete the development of their personal career portfolio and resume.  They will apply theory and skills in an area Long Term Nursing Facility.  Recertification of CPR and AED training will be offered for an additional $12 fee.  The curriculum is based on the National Health Care foundation standards.  Upon completion of this course, students may be eligible to take the Nurse Aid Exam for certification in the state of S.C. Students must have a valid SC Social Security card in order to take the certification exam.  Students are required to purchase the course workbook, name tag, and uniform.  The cost of the state exam is approximately $100.

Fee $15.  Graphic Communications 1A will cover the basics of Graphic Arts from design, to offset printing, to bindery.  The student will design and print personalized note pads, business cards, and other projects for themselves.  The student will gain experience with Macintosh computers, image assembly and press operations and binder procedures.

Fee $15. Students in 2A will use this course to expand on the Graphics 1 course. 

Fee $15. Graphics 2B will learn basic black and white photography techniques using 35 mm manual cameras.  Students will shoot, develop, print, and mat their photographs.  The student will also learn how to use a digital camera.  All cameras are provided.

Health Science Technology

This course is designed for students who are interested in an introduction to and an in depth study of information needed to pursue a career in the health care field.  The curriculum gives an overview of health care opportunities while defining their responsibilities for the promotion of and implementation of the health and well being of the clients they serve.  This course has an emphasis on ANATOMY and PHYSIOLOGY for the future health care workers.  Students will learn many basic skills all health care worker will use in caring for others.  Introduction to MEDICAL TERMINOLOGY will also be covered.  Shadowing opportunities will be explored.  The curriculum is based on the National Health Care Foundation Standards.  Students will receive certification in CPR and AED.

Students will rotate into Emergency Response Services class for 9 weeks to Attain First AID/CPR and AED training and certification.

Fee $15.  The foundation of this course comes from the South Carolina Criminal Justice Academy.  This program is designed to expose the students to a variety of careers in the field of Law Enforcement and cover necessary subjects within the State Guidelines.  Emphasis will also be placed on arrest procedures, crime scene investigations, physical fitness and other law related topics. Students may receive national dispatch certifications.

Health Science Technology courses introduce the student to themes and components common to a wide variety of health careers and provide a foundation for further study in the health professions.  The course content emphasizes lifelong learning and the interdisciplinary team approach with special emphasis given to ethical practice, communication skills, infection control, computer literacy and work-based learning.  The curriculum introduces the student to hygiene and grooming, medical terminology, body structure, nutrition and tasks unique to most health care careers and provides for review and mastery of these topics by graduation.  The course also covers anatomy and physiology of all body systems and high level tasks unique to most health care careers and geriatric and terminally ill care.

 

Pharmacology Tech

Sports Medicine emphasizes the prevention of athletic injuries, including the components of exercise science, anatomy, principles of safety, first aid, cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), and vital signs.  Subject matter will also include discussion of legal issues, members of the sports medicine team, nutrition, protective sports equipment, environmental safety issues, taping and wrapping, mechanisms of injury, and application of other sports medicine concepts.  Students interested in healthcare careers in athletic training, physical therapy, medicine, exercise physiology, nursing, biomechanics, nutrition, psychology, and radiology will benefit from this course.
