The Commission on Higher Education recommends students have 4 units of science for college admission to a SC college or university (physical science with 3 additional units)
The core course sequence for science is:
The core courses are offered at 3 levels. In addition to the core courses, we offer electives and Advanced Placement courses. Our elective courses allow upperclassmen to further their study in an area of interest. Our Advanced Placement courses allow upperclassmen to experience college level courses and the opportunity to receive college credit!
The electives for science are:
With the exception of Meteorology/Physical Geology, there is a prerequisite of Chemistry 1 for elective courses. Students interested in taking one of the above courses should talk to their current science teacher! Even though they are called electives, teachers must recommend these courses. Underclassmen who have an interest in science may wish to plan ahead and consider taking 2 core science courses during their sophomore or junior year to allow flexibility in scheduling science courses (this will only be recommended for top students in science and math – interested students should talk to their current science teacher).
The AP courses for science are:
Chemistry 1 Honors is a prerequisite for all AP science courses. Physics 1 Honors is highly recommended before a student takes AP Physics . Students interested in taking one of the AP science courses should talk to their current science teacher and the AP teacher who currently teaches the course they are interested in. Students enrolled in AP courses must take the college board AP exam in May.
