PALMETTO AWARD August, 2007: Grove Elementary and Donaldson Career Center are among award-winning Palmetto Gold and Silver schools that will share their positive improvements in student achievement with others through the State Department of Education's "Palmetto Gold and Silver Showcase" program. Donaldson Career Center serves a community with a poverty index of more than 82%, and is meeting the needs of its 240 students through career-oriented programs and community involvement. "An area of direct impact has been the School Improvement Council and advisory groups," said principal Cheryl McClure. "These groups have expanded our horizons through co-op, equipment, and community involvement in the school." Donaldson Career Center has also improved and strengthened its programs by using the Baldrige model of continuous improvement. An extremely important factor in Donaldson Career Center's student success is a staff of highly qualified and professional teachers. For example, five of 13 teachers are pursuing advanced degrees, and students are using a Key Train program designed to help them gain valuable skills for a specific career. KUDER assessment allows students to take inventory of their skills and interests and match that with possible career choices. The Palmetto Gold and Silver Showcase Program allows educators to discover best practices in neighboring schools, and to design similar successful programs in their schools. |
