2009 Student of Integrity Award
Purpose
The purpose of the Student of Integrity Award is to recognize high school students who personify high character articulation through leadership, community service, and overall personal integrity and academic history.
The Scholarship Award
Students from across the Upstate region of South Carolina will be selected by a panel of judges to receive scholarships of $1,000 each to an accredited school/college of his/her choice. Awards will be presented to recipient students at the BBB’s Annual Meeting and Torch Awards for Marketplace Ethics in October 2009. Scholarships will be distributed once the BBB receives verification of the student’s college enrollment.
Eligibility Requirements

The applicant must be a resident of the United States or Canada.

The applicant must attend an accredited public/private or vocational school in the Upstate region of South Carolina, which includes the following counties: Abbeville; Anderson; Cherokee; Greenville; Greenwood; Laurens; Oconee; Pickens; Spartanburg; Union.

The applicant must be a high school Junior during the 2008-09 school year, and should have a desire to continue his/her education.
Application / Criteria
Criteria for the award includes: Leadership, Community service, Character Articulation (essay), academic.

Essay – Students will be asked to read The Uncommon Sense Declaration, which has been adopted by the BBB as a guide for business ethics and conduct in the workplace. After reading the document, students will be asked to write an essay not to exceed 300 words on: “Why is personal integrity and ethics important, what would I be losing if I gave them up and how will I motivate others to strive for building higher character in today’s society?”

Selection Process
A panel of judges comprised of local business and community leaders will select scholarship recipients. Judges will select the scholarship recipients based on their personal achievements, academic accomplishments, contributions to their communities and schools, and overall personal integrity and character.
Notification
Scholarship recipients and their respective school officials will be notified by mail regarding their selection as an award winner. Winning students and school officials will receive invitations to attend the BBB® Upstate Annual Meeting & Torch Awards to be held in October, 2009 at the Hyatt Regency Greenville, during which Student of Integrity Award winners will be recognized.

Dorothy Marron Memorial Scholarship Program

American Leprosy Missions

Purpose: In memory of long-time ALM Donor, Dorothy Marron, ALM has established a scholarship to benefit students in Greenville County, South Carolina. Scholarships will be awarded annually to graduating high school students in public, private and home schools, who intend to pursue degrees that will lead to a vocation involving international service to the poor, disenfranchised and afflicted peoples in the developing countries of the world.

 Eligibility:

 

  1. The student and his/her parents or legal guardians must be residents of Greenville County, SC at the time of high school graduation.
  2. The student must have a cumulative GPA of 2.5 or better on a 4.0 scale at the time of application.  Transcripts must be submitted with the application and final transcripts must be submitted before awards will be made.
  3. The student must already be accepted at a college or university and intend to enroll as a full-time student.
  4. The student must be pursing a degree that would lead to a career in overseas service or missionary work. These fields would include, but are not limited to: medicine, nursing, international studies, teaching, non-profit management, theology, missions or social work. Other areas of study may qualify as long as the student can explain how they will use the degree to serve the poor in the developing world.
  5. The student must be of high moral character as evidenced by three (3) letters of endorsement, one of which must be from a teacher at the high school that the student attended, one from a leader of service work performed by the student, and one from a leader of the student’s church.
  6. The student is required to write a 250-500 word essay explaining his or her calling to overseas work with the poor and his or her vision for such service to mankind.
  7. All scholarships will be awarded upon successful graduation from high school. Students must submit a copy of their diploma and transcripts to ALM before awards will be made.
  8. First time awardees must be 25 years of age or younger.

 

Application Process:

 

  1. Request an application from ALM by calling Wanda Sanders at 864-271-7040.
  2. Send in the completed application together with three letters of endorsement and the essay to ALM no later than February 15th of each year. Send to: Marron Scholarship Program, Attn: Wanda Sanders, American Leprosy Missions, 1 Alm Way, Greenville, SC  29601.
  3. Finalists will be required to appear before the scholarship committee for an interview.
  4. Scholarship winners will be announced each year in conjunction with the ALM Board meeting, which takes place the first Friday in May.

 

  

Scholarship Details:

 

  1. Awards will be made annually to two high school seniors or graduates. Students who have already started studies at a college or university are not eligible to apply. However, students who completed high school but have had an interval of time pass before they have decided to start post high school studies are eligible to apply.
  2. Scholarships are for $2,000.00 and can be renewed for up to an additional 3 years. Students must submit a letter requesting renewal each year by March 1 and an official grade report or transcript as soon as available.
  3. Students who are awarded scholarships must sign a scholarship agreement form.
  4. Students must notify ALM immediately about any change in their college status.
  5. Scholarship awards are made payable to the student and the college as joint recipients.
  6. Students may be enrolled at any accredited college, university, technical college or institute.

Greenville Hospital System

The Auxiliary to the Greenville Hospital System will award college scholarships of at least $1,000 this spring to graduating high school seniors who are the son or daughter of a Greenville Hospital System employee or volunteer.  Grandchildren of volunteers and active teen volunteers will also be eligible for the scholarship.

The “Light Up A Life” Scholarship program was established in 1992 as an annual award to be given to entering college freshmen who plan to pursue a career in a healthcare profession.  The students must have achieved at least a 3.0 grade point average in mathematics and science and must be officially accepted for admission to an accredited university, college or technical school for the summer or fall term.  All qualified high school seniors are encouraged to apply for the scholarship. 

 

DRUG FREE COMMUNITIES SUPPORT PROGRAM (DFC) GRANT

The Center for Substance Abuse Prevention has announced a Drug Free Communities Support Program (DFC) grant.  The Upromise Scholarship (the "Scholarship") is administered by
 Scholarship Management Services a division of Scholarship America.
 Scholarship Management Services is the nation's largest designer and
 manager of scholarship and tuition reimbursement programs for
 corporations, foundations, associations and individuals.
 
 Eligibility

 Awards
 It is expected that 200 awards of $2,500 each, or a total of $500,000

 based on actual contributions received from Upromise partner
 companies which have committed funds to the Scholarship. Awards are
 to be used for education-related expenses. Awards are not renewable;
 however, students may reapply to the Scholarship each year they meet
 eligibility requirements provided the Scholarship is offered in
 subsequent years.
 
 Awards are for undergraduate study only.
 
 Application Process
 Start by clicking on the Apply Now link at the bottom of this page.
 You will need to read and agree to an Online Application Consent and
 register as an applicant. During the application process, you will be
 able to leave the site by clicking on the Save and Log Out button
 located on any application page. In order to return, you must enter
 your username and password as provided when registering for an
 application account. The application must be submitted electronically
 by 11:59 p.m.on February 28, 2009.
 
 You may wish to gather the following information that will be needed
 for the application process:
 
 Student's academic record/transcript of grades
 Financial information from the family's submitted 2007 tax return
 Carefully review your application before submission. We recommend
 that you print a hard copy of your application for your records. Do
 not send a printed copy to Scholarship Management Services. All
 application pages with required fields must be completed in the
 format described in order to submit the application. Standard
 capitalization (Jill Smith, 101 Main Street, New York, NY) must be
 used when entering data. Once the application is submitted, no
 further revisions can be made. You will be submitting your electronic
 application directly to Scholarship Management Services and not
 Upromise.
 
 You, the applicant, are responsible for gathering and submitting all
 required information. Since applications are evaluated on the
 information supplied, please answer all questions as completely as
 possible. Your application is considered confidential and is handled
 only by Scholarship Management Services in connection with your
 application, and such handling may include providing some or all of
 your submitted information to Upromise. You will receive an emailed
 confirmation when the electronic application is successfully
 submitted. Late submissions and incomplete applications will not be
 considered.
 
 Selection and Notification of Finalists and Recipients
 Scholarship finalists and recipients are selected on the basis of
 financial need as determined by level of Expected Family
 Contribution. Scholarship Management Services applies a process
 similar to the Federal Methodology used by most college financial aid
 offices in determining the family's ability to contribute toward
 educational expenses.
 
 The competition is a two-step process. For all applicants, the first
 step of the process is to submit the application electronically to
 Scholarship Management Services. By mid-March 2009, only those
 applicants who have been selected as finalists will be contacted to
 provide further information. Applicants who are not selected as
 finalists will be giving no further consideration. In the second step
 of the process, finalists will be required to submit additional
 supporting documents to verify information they provided on the
 application form including a transcript of grades and copies of
 relevant calendar year 2007 1040 tax returns. Full details will be
 provided in the finalist notification email. Finalists who do not
 submit the required supporting materials by the specified deadline
 will be given no further consideration.
 
 Selection of recipients is made by Scholarship Management Services.
 In no instance does any officer or employee of Upromise play a part
 in the selection of finalists or recipients. All applicants agree to
 accept the decision of Scholarship Management Services as final.
 
 Recipients will be notified in early May 2009 and listed on the
 Upromise website (www.upromise.com/scholarship <http://www.upromise.com/scholarship> ). Not all applicants
 to the Scholarship will be selected as recipients. Students may
 reapply to the Scholarship each year they meet eligibility
 requirements provided the Scholarship is offered in subsequent years.
 
 Payment of Scholarships
 Scholarship Management Services processes scholarship payments on
 behalf of Upromise. Payment of awards will be made in one installment
 on or about August 15, 2009. A check will be mailed to each
 recipient's home address and will be made payable to the school for
 the student.
 
 Obligations of Scholarship Recipients
 Recipients are required to timely notify Scholarship Management
 Services of any change in address, school enrollment or other
 relevant information and to send a complete transcript when requested.
 
 Revisions
 Upromise reserves the right to review the conditions and procedures
 of the Scholarship and to make changes at any time, including
 termination of the Scholarship.

AES Engineers Scholarship
The consulting firm of AES Engineers is committed to continuing its support of higher education by providing scholarships to deserving students.
