Members of the
Southside High School ROTC Drill Team grabbed the attention of Cherrydale's
students in an awesome way, highlighting a terrific week of Red Ribbon
activities. The students were awed by the group's precision and discipline which
was exhibited in various drills performed in the school's beautiful new
gymnasium. In between some of the drills, the Southside students addressed the
group about the importance of staying away from drugs. One group of high school
students from the team performed a sketch about what might happen in a school
setting if someone was under the influence of drugs or alcohol. A few Cherrydale
students were asked to participate in a simulation that involved doing
jumping jacks while breathing normally, then repeating the calisthenics while
breathing only through a straw. The student volunteers were asked if it was
harder to breathe that way to which they all said, "Yes." This event simulated
the effects of emphysema on the body and was conducted in an effort to prevent
students from smoking cigarettes and other forms of tobacco or marijuana.
Following the assembly, the Southside Drill Team led students in a parade around
the neighborhood as Cherrydale's Panther Pride was shown while encouraging
residents to remain drug free. Cherrydale is grateful to Southside High School
and its advisor Major Whitley for their enthusiastic performance that was
truly one of the highlights of our Red Ribbon Week celebration. - Mr. Hugh
Rist, Red Ribbon Coordinator
