About the Principal

Mrs. Scarlet H. Black is the  principal of Cherrydale Elementary School.  She has been with the District for 28 years, beginning as guidance counselor at Berea, Monaview, Parker, and League Middle Schools.  Her administrative career followed and was the first administrative assistant at the elementary level.  She went on to become the first assistant principal at East North Street Elementary and served in that capacity as the school earned magnet school status.  During 2001-2002 school year, Mrs. Black  became principal of Cone Primary School (grades K4 - 2).  On March 14, 2003, she was named principal of Sans Souci Intermediate School (grades 3-5).  As Cone Primary and Sans Souci Intermediate consolidated, Mrs. Black was named principal of both facilities in 2003-04 school year.  In 2004-05, she was named the principal of Cherrydale Elementary School and guided the school through the construction of the new facility on the old Sans Souci Intermediate school site.

In 2002-2003 Mrs. Black was added to the Honor Roll of School Administrators by the South Carolina Association of School Librarians. She earned this honor for her motivation to develop outstanding media center and technology programs at Cone Primary. Mrs. Black currently serves as a Senate appointee on the First Steps Board. She has received the Order of the Jessamine, and many other community service awards at both the state and local levels.  Mrs. Black has completed additional studies at Furman University and the University of South Carolina.  She is also a DANFORTH FELLOW for Promoting Outstanding Leadership.

She earned a bachelor’s degree from North Carolina Central University, a master’s degree from the University of North Carolina-Charlotte, and a master’s plus 30 from Clemson University.

Mrs. Black's commitment to children is unyielding.  Her motto resonates throughout Cherrydale..."it's all about the children!"

Principal's Corner

I encourage each of you to become an educational role model for your children.  Your children need to know you care about their future and that education is the key to that future.  How can you become an educational role model?

Read newsletters and other information coming from school.
Have frequent conversations with the teacher about your child's academic progress, strengths, and weakness.
Ask for and attend parent teacher conferences.
Look for and read progress reports and report cards.
Attend PTA and after school related programs.
Talk with your children about school and the things they have learned.
Get your children to school everyday and on time.  Once they are here, keep them here, and plan appointments after school
         hours.
Be positive and speak positively about your school.

Cherrydale is a school on the move, and we want your best efforts in helping us achieve solid academic success.  Thank you for all you will do to make this a reality.
Sincerely,
Mrs. Scarlet H. Black, Principal
